Issyk-Kul: More Than Just a Lake

Issyk-Kul in eastern Kyrgyzstan is one of the largest mountain lakes in the world. It sits at around 1,600 meters, framed by the snow peaks of the Tien Shan, and its name means warm lake in Kyrgyz. The water is slightly saline and the lake never freezes, even in midwinter. Most visitors come for the beaches, but the region around the lake offers canyons, trekking, hot springs and several thousand years of history. Here is how to plan it.

The north shore: beaches and resorts

If you want infrastructure, head north. Cholpon-Ata is the main resort town, with hotels, guesthouses and Soviet-era sanatoriums lining the shore. The season runs roughly from June to September, with July and August the busiest months, when visitors from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Russia fill the beaches. You will find cafes, restaurants and the full range of water activities.

Just outside Cholpon-Ata is an open-air petroglyph site with rock carvings that are several thousand years old, showing hunting scenes, ibex and snow leopards. Many carvings are weathered, so it is worth going with a guide who can point out the best ones.

The south shore: canyons and quiet beaches

The south shore is the opposite of the north. There are few resorts, long stretches of empty beach and small villages where yurt camps and family guesthouses replace hotels. This is also where the most striking landscapes are. Skazka Canyon, also called Fairy Tale Canyon, is a maze of red and orange rock formations shaped by erosion. The Barskoon gorge leads to waterfalls and high pastures, and the red cliffs of Jeti-Oguz, the Seven Bulls, rise just west of Karakol. Near Bokonbayevo you can visit local eagle hunters who still practice this tradition.

Karakol: gateway to the Tien Shan

At the eastern end of the lake, Karakol is the base for almost everything in the mountains. From here, trekkers head to Ala-Kul lake, the Karakol valley and Altyn Arashan, a valley at 2,600 meters with natural hot spring pools, reached on foot, on horseback or by 4x4 from the village of Ak-Suu. In winter, the Karakol ski base offers the best skiing in Kyrgyzstan at low prices compared to Europe.

Beyond the beach

The lake itself is large enough for sailing, kitesurfing and diving. Archaeologists have found traces of settlements submerged beneath the water, and some diving operators run trips to these sites.

For a soak without a trek, the village of Chon-Oruktu on the north shore, about 60 km east of Cholpon-Ata, has several hot spring complexes with pools at different temperatures. Combined with Altyn Arashan and the springs in the Ak-Suu valley near Karakol, you can build hot springs into almost any Issyk-Kul itinerary.

Issyk-Kul in winter

Winter is quiet around the lake. Many north shore hotels close, the beaches empty out and the snow line drops to the water. The lake stays open, which makes for unusual scenery: blue water against white mountains. This is the season for skiing in Karakol and for hot springs, when the contrast between steaming water and frosty air is at its best.

Getting there and best time to visit

  • From Bishkek, marshrutkas and shared taxis leave from the Western Bus Station. Cholpon-Ata takes around 4 hours, Karakol 6 to 7 hours.
  • In July and August, a cheap and scenic train runs from Bishkek to Balykchy at the western tip of the lake.
  • For swimming, come between June and September. For trekking, June to September is also the main window. For skiing, December to March.
