It's breathtaking! The Yangi Kala Gorges are one of the most unique places in Turkmenistan! They are located 165 km north of Balkanabat and 190 km east of Turkmenbashi. From the Turkmen language “yangi kala” means “fiery fortresses”. The gorges got their bizarre name because of the rains and winds that shaped them and colored them in white, yellow, ochre, purple and red colors, reminiscent of stone castles. It took millions of years for the gorges to acquire such an unusual shape, although in ancient times the Tethys Ocean existed. By the way, you can even find fossilized shells, crustaceans and other sea creatures there. This place is especially popular among tourists who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and spend the night in tents.
