About this host
Assylbek is based in Aktau and runs jeep tours across the Mangystau region in western Kazakhstan, where he has worked for more than five years.
His trips cover the region's main natural landmarks: Bozzhyra, Torysh (Valley of Balls), Sherkala, Airacts (Valley of Castles), Karaman-Ata underground mosque, Tuzbair salt lake and the Karagiye depression, usually combined into multi-day routes of three to nine days. Nights are spent camping, in a yurt, or in hotels along the way depending on the season and the route.
Assylbek drives personally, in a 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado set up for the region's rough tracks, and for larger groups he brings in extra jeeps so each car carries a manageable number of passengers. He supplies the tents, mattresses, sleeping bags and camping meals himself, so travelers only need to bring their personal belongings.
He builds the itinerary around what a group wants to see and how many days they have, discussing the route and any changes directly with travelers before and during the trip. He speaks Kazakh and Russian fluently and some English, and describes himself as someone who wants to show visitors his home region.

Assylbek was an amazing host and guide. When our luggage didn’t make the flight to Aktau he liaised with the airline to get it back to us with minimal impact on our plans. He knew the local areas we wanted to visit extremely well and as photographers with a specific set of objectives he knew where we would be best placed to camp overnight for the best sunrise and sunset shots. Starting in the desert overnight was a fantastic experience and the nights were did this were comfortable and well catered for by Assylbek. His car was clean, mechanically well maintained and he had radios to contact others once of emergency. Really recommend Assylbek to anyone who is looking for a guide in the Mangystau region. A lovely person, knows the area looked after us exceptionally well.
