This will unfortunately be a long and negative review of Bayarkhuu. Firstly, the car was not in good condition. There is a list of things that malfunctioned: 1. Firstly, the diff lock didn't work, which got us into a bad position when we were stuck in mud. 2. Secondly, the rear suspension bar was broken, which resulted in the suspension itself breaking roughly halfway into our drive. We had to drive to a mechanic to repair it, and informed Bayarkhuu of this. Instead of thanking us for taking it to a mechanic and preventing further damage, he said we had caused USD300 worth of damage and should bear the cost of this. We simply paid the mechanic 250k Tugriks to repair the issue and get on with our road trip. 3. Thirdly, the engine would often overheat and not start in spite of us frequently topping up the engine oil and coolant. This cost is considerable time on our trip, waiting for the engine to cool down before switching it back on. We tried to reach Bayarkhuu to inform him of this and ask for advice on how to proceed when it happened for the first time, but our call was ignored and not returned. Bayarkhuu also monitored the car and made us aware of this. He texted us once asking us at 9pm asking us to drive carefully at night. And he texted us a second time asking us to drive less per day. This constant monitoring was very disconcerting. Upon returning the car, we had caused a few minor scratches which is to be expected when off-roading. Bayarkhuu claimed repairing these scratches would cost 1 million Tugriks. I strongly disagreed as this was clearly a rip off, so Bayarkhuu called the police. Upon explaining our position to the police, Bayarkhuu agreed to "accept" assuming the cost of the broken suspension and us paying 250k Tugriks, a material climb-down from his initial position. I have visited over 60 countries and have rented cars in many of them. I can say without hesitation that this has been one of the worst car rental experiences I have ever had. If you can, please avoid renting from Bayarkhuu.
Rented a 1998 Land cruiser. Great communication from start to finish. The vehicles are mechanically in good condition and will get you through any adventure in Mongolia. If there was any problem there was always someone on the other end of the phone to help. Honest and fair people to rent from.
