The Karynzharyk Depression is one of the most spectacular and photogenic places in Mangystau, where time seems to have stood still for millions of years. Vast salt flats surrounded by the towering escarpments of the Ustyurt Plateau create landscapes that resemble another planet. Rising from the white plain are isolated table mountains, forming a breathtaking panorama that has become one of the symbols of Kazakhstan’s wild nature. Thanks to its remoteness and almost complete silence, Karynzharyk offers a rare sense of endless space and true connection with nature. At sunrise and sunset, the chalk cliffs and salt flats are painted in soft golden and pink hues, turning this extraordinary landscape into a paradise for photographers, nature lovers, and travelers seeking to discover the most hidden and untouched corners of Mangystau. The Karagyay Depression (historical local name — Karakiya) is the deepest dry depression in Kazakhstan and one of the lowest points in all of Asia. Its bottom lies 132 meters below the level of the World Ocean. Geologically, it is a colossal basin‑depression that stretches 85 km in length and up to 25 km in width in the middle of the desert plateau of the Mangyshlak Peninsula.
