The history of Rohtas Fort traces its origins to the 16 centuries. The construction of the fort was initiated in 1541 by Emperor Sher Shah Suri as a strategic response to prevent the return of the Mughal Emperor Humayun and to suppress the local Gakhar tribes of the region. In 1997 Rohtas Fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
