Join a 2-day journey from Nukus to the Aral Sea — one of the most unusual and powerful destinations in Central Asia. This tour takes you through the history, silence, and surreal landscapes of Karakalpakstan: from ancient necropolises and the former port city of Muynak to the ship cemetery, the Aralkum desert, the Ustyurt Plateau, and the remaining waters of the Aral Sea.
Along the way, you will discover how a sea turned into a desert, see remote landscapes shaped by salt, wind, and time, and experience the atmosphere of a place that few travelers ever reach. The tour includes long desert drives, historical stops, local stories, and an overnight stay near the Aral Sea in a yurt camp or guesthouse, depending on the season and availability.
This experience is ideal for travelers who want more than a standard sightseeing trip — a real expedition into nature, history, and the living memory of the Aral Sea.

Start the journey from Nukus and drive toward the Aral Sea region. On the way, visit Mizdakhan Necropolis, one of the most mysterious historical sites in Karakalpakstan, known for its ancient tombs, legends, and sacred monuments. Continue to Muynak, a former port city that once stood on the shore of the Aral Sea. Visit the Ship Cemetery, where abandoned fishing vessels now rest in the desert, and learn about the history of the Aral Sea disaster. You may also visit the local museum dedicated to the story of the sea and the people who lived by it. After Muynak, continue across the former seabed of the Aral Sea, now known as the Aralkum Desert. The route passes through remote desert roads, salt plains, and wide open landscapes before reaching the Ustyurt Plateau and the remaining waters of the Aral Sea. Arrive near the Aral Sea shore. Spend time walking by the water, enjoying the silence of the landscape, taking photos, and, depending on the season and weather, swimming in the highly salty water. Dinner and overnight stay will be arranged in a yurt camp or guesthouse near the sea.
Wake up early to see the sunrise over the Aral Sea, one of the most memorable moments of the trip. After breakfast, continue exploring the surrounding desert landscapes and viewpoints around the sea. Drive back through the Ustyurt Plateau area and visit Sudochie Lake, a peaceful natural site known for its birdlife, reeds, and abandoned fishing settlements. Depending on the season, you may see different bird species and remains of old village life connected to the former Aral Sea region. Continue the return journey through the desert and steppe landscapes back toward Kungrad and Nukus. Along the way, there will be stops for photos, short walks, and local stories about Karakalpakstan, the Aral Sea, and the life of people in this remote region.
