The Karynzharyk Depression is one of the most spectacular and photogenic places in Mangystau, where time seems to have stood still for millions of years. Vast salt flats surrounded by the towering escarpments of the Ustyurt Plateau create landscapes that resemble another planet. Rising from the white plain are isolated table mountains, forming a breathtaking panorama that has become one of the symbols of Kazakhstan’s wild nature.
Thanks to its remoteness and almost complete silence, Karynzharyk offers a rare sense of endless space and true connection with nature. At sunrise and sunset, the chalk cliffs and salt flats are painted in soft golden and pink hues, turning this extraordinary landscape into a paradise for photographers, nature lovers, and travelers seeking to discover the most hidden and untouched corners of Mangystau.
Day 1: Aktau – Zhanaozen – Karynzharyk Depression Your journey begins with an early morning departure from Aktau. The route covers approximately 550 km and takes around 8–10 hours, including stops. Along the way, we pass through the city of Zhanaozen, the last major settlement before entering the remote landscapes of the Ustyurt Plateau. Due to the long driving distance and the remoteness of the destination, no additional sightseeing stops are included on this day. The journey itself gradually reveals the dramatic scenery of Mangystau, with endless степpe landscapes giving way to the vast expanses of the Ustyurt region. By evening, we arrive at the breathtaking Karynzharyk Depression, one of the most spectacular and least accessible natural wonders of Kazakhstan. Surrounded by towering escarpments and immense salt flats, the area offers unforgettable panoramic views and a sense of complete solitude. After enjoying sunset over this extraordinary landscape, we set up camp and spend the night in tents under the star-filled sky, experiencing the tranquility and untouched beauty of Mangystau far from civilization.
Day 2: Karynzharyk – Bozzhyra – Return to City In the morning, we leave the campsite in the Karynzharyk Depression and head toward the Bozzhyra area. The route goes through off-road desert landscapes of the Ustyurt Plateau and takes approximately 5–7 hours depending on road conditions and stops. Upon arrival in Bozzhyra, we explore the main viewpoints. This is one of the most famous locations in Mangystau, known for its white chalk cliffs and panoramic views over vast valleys and dramatic escarpments. After sightseeing, we begin the return journey toward the city. The drive takes around 6–8 hours. Arrival in Aktau is expected in the evening, marking the end of the tour.
