This fast-paced, high-reward itinerary takes you through the very best of Northern Tajikistan’s Fann Mountains and its historic northern hub, Khujand.
You will transition from the ancient, bustling Silk Road, directly into the dramatic, high-altitude landscapes of Tajikistan. Over three days, you will witness striking alpine lakes, experience warm Tajik mountain hospitality in remote guesthouses, explore villages frozen in time, and finish with a rich dose of history and culture in one of Central Asia's oldest cities.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Самарканд, Узбекистан to Пенджикент, Таджикистан
Day 1: Samarkand to the Seven Lakes (Marquzor Lakes) Morning (08:00 AM): Departure from your hotel in Samarkand. Head towards the Uzbekistan–Tajikistan border crossing (Jartepa/Sarazm). Late Morning: After border formalities, meet your Tajik driver/guide. Drive past the ancient town of Panjakent and head south into the Shing Valley toward the Seven Lakes. Afternoon: Explore the cascading lakes. You will drive past the first few lakes (Mizhgon, Soya, Hushyor, Nofin) and can enjoy a light hike around Lake Hurdak and Marguzor (the 6th lake). Evening: Arrive at the village of Nofin. Check-in, unwind, and enjoy a traditional homemade dinner. Overnight: "Jumaboy" Guesthouse (Seven Lakes).
Day 2: Пенджикент, Таджикистан to Айни, Таджикистан
Day 2: Voru Village, Iskanderkul & Saritag Morning (08:00 AM): Breakfast at the guesthouse, then depart the Seven Lakes. Drive towards the scenic alpine Voru Village, known for its unique layout, ancient history, and traditional lifestyle tucked away in the mountains. Afternoon: Continue the drive via the Anzob pass/tunnel area towards the legendary Lake Iskanderkul (Lake of Alexander the Great). Take a walk to the Fan Niagara Waterfall (a striking 40-meter waterfall reached by a short 15-20 minute hike). Visit the mysterious Snake Lake (Zmeinoe Ozero). Evening: Drive a short distance further into the valley to the picturesque village of Saritag. Overnight: Local Guesthouse in Saritag Village.
Day 3: Айни, Таджикистан to Худжанд, Таджикистан
Day 3: Saritag to Khujand City Tour & Oybek Border Drop-off Morning (07:30 AM): Early breakfast in Saritag. Depart the mountains and drive north towards Khujand, the second-largest city in Tajikistan, traversing the spectacular Shahriston Tunnel. Afternoon: Khujand City Tour Panjshanbe Bazaar: Explore one of the most colorful and authentic central markets in Central Asia. Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum: Visit the beautiful religious complex located right next to the bazaar. Khujand Fortress: Learn about the city's ancient history at the rebuilt fortress and historical museum. Quick lunch trying local Khujand-style plov or somsa. Late Afternoon / Evening: Drive from Khujand to the Oybek border checkpoint (approx. 1 hour). End of Tour: Clear customs at the Oybek border to return to Uzbekistan (Tashkent is about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from the Uzbek side of the border).

What to know
Passports & Visas: Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity. Check if your nationality requires an e-Visa for Tajikistan or if you qualify for the visa-free regime. Cash: While Samarkand and Khujand have ATMs, the mountains (Seven Lakes, Saritag) do not. Bring enough cash (Tajik Somoni or USD for exchanging) for personal expenses and tips. Clothing: Even in summer, evenings in Saritag and the Seven Lakes can get chilly due to the high altitude. Pack a light jacket and comfortable hiking shoes for the waterfall walk.
