Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Köneürgench, Turkmenistan to Door to Hell, Derweze, Turkmenistan

📍Day 1: Shavat Border – Kunya-Urgench – Dashoguz – Darvaza (Gas Crater Adventure) Your Turkmenistan journey begins at the Shavat border crossing, where we meet you and assist with all entry formalities. After a warm welcome, we head straight to one of the country’s most impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Kunya-Urgench, the ancient capital of the Khorezm Empire. Here, you’ll explore a collection of striking medieval monuments, including: • The elegant Mausoleum of Turabek Khanym (14th century), famed for its intricate mosaic dome, • The Mausoleum of Sultan Tekesh (12th century), one of the oldest surviving tombs in Central Asia, • The Mausoleum of Il-Arslan (12th century), resembling a grand crown, • And the towering Minaret of Kutlug Timur (14th century), the tallest in Central Asia at over 60 meters. We then continue with a scenic drive to Dashoguz (100 km / approx. 2 hours), where you’ll enjoy a local lunch at a traditional restaurant. After lunch, we head deep into the Karakum Desert on a thrilling 4–5 hour overland journey (315 km) to reach one of Turkmenistan’s most surreal and iconic natural wonders — the Darvaza Gas Crater, also known as the “Door to Hell.” Before arriving at the main flaming crater, we make brief stops at the lesser-known but fascinating Water Crater and Mud Crater, giving you a full picture of the geological phenomena in this region. As the sun sets, witness the dramatic glow of the burning crater, a truly unforgettable sight against the desert night sky. Enjoy a barbecue dinner under the stars, with the fire of the crater flickering in the distance. 🛏 Overnight in a traditional desert tent camp, surrounded by silence and stars — a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Day 2: Door to Hell, Derweze, Turkmenistan to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

🕌 Day 2: Darvaza – Scenic Drive to Ashgabat & City Sights Wake up in the heart of the Karakum Desert and enjoy a peaceful breakfast under the open sky, with the morning sun rising over the dunes. After breakfast, we depart for Ashgabat, the gleaming white-marble capital of Turkmenistan. The drive takes approximately 4 hours (285 km) and offers a striking contrast as you transition from desert landscapes to one of the most unique cities in Central Asia. Upon arrival in Ashgabat, check in to your hotel and take a short rest before we begin our city exploration. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, where you’ll sample traditional Turkmen cuisine. In the afternoon, embark on a curated city tour that blends modern grandeur with national pride. Highlights include: • “Halk Hakydasy” Memorial Complex – a powerful tribute to the victims of the 1948 earthquake and the Second World War, showcasing bold architecture and emotional symbolism. • The impressive Wedding Palace – an architectural gem in the shape of a celestial sphere, offering panoramic views of the city. • A stop at the futuristic “Yyldyz” Hotel, designed to resemble a five-pointed star — one of the city’s most luxurious landmarks. • Visit the grand “Arkadag” Monument, dedicated to the former president and symbolizing the modern vision of Turkmenistan. Conclude your day with a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, followed by a relaxing night in your comfortable hotel. 🛏 Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 3: Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

🕌 Day 3: Ancient Capitals, Sacred Sights & Underground Wonders Start your day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel, then dive into a full day of cultural immersion and natural marvels. Our morning begins at the bustling Altyn Asyr Oriental Bazaar — one of the largest markets in Central Asia. Wander through rows of vibrant textiles, local produce, spices, and traditional crafts. It’s a great opportunity to feel the heartbeat of local life and pick up unique souvenirs. In the afternoon, we explore the historical roots of Turkmenistan with a visit to the Old Nissa Fortress — a UNESCO World Heritage Site, once the capital of the Parthian Empire. Walk among the ruins of royal halls and temples, framed by the desert hills. Next, we visit the majestic Spiritual Mosque of Saparmurat Turkmenbashy, the largest mosque in Central Asia and one of the largest single-domed mosques in the world. This marble masterpiece can host up to 20,000 worshippers, and houses the family tomb of Turkmenistan’s first president. A spiritual and architectural landmark. We then drive to one of the most surreal destinations in the country — Kow-Ata Underground Lake, hidden inside a vast cave beneath the Kopetdag mountains. Its warm, mineral-rich waters — known for their high hydrogen sulfide content — have long been believed to offer therapeutic health benefits. You can even take a dip in its otherworldly blue waters (optional). Enjoy a lunch at a nearby local restaurant. In the late afternoon, continue to: • The Seyitjemaleddin Mosque (15th century), a beautiful medieval structure set in serene surroundings, • And the Gäwers Private Akhal-Teke Horse Farm, where you’ll meet the legendary Akhal-Teke horses — famous for their rare metallic sheen, elegance, and importance in Turkmen identity. Conclude your adventurous day with dinner at a traditional local restaurant, before returning to your hotel. 🛏 Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 4: Ashgabat, Turkmenistan to Merv, Turkmenistan

🏺 Day 4: From Marble Capital to Ancient Merv – Cradle of Civilizations Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then embark on a scenic drive to Mary — a cultural heartland in eastern Turkmenistan, located approximately 350 km from Ashgabat (approx. 3–4 hours). On the way, you’ll witness the ever-changing landscapes, from semi-desert plains to fertile oases. Upon arrival, we head directly to one of the most legendary archaeological sites on the Silk Road: the Ancient City of Merv — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and once the largest city in the world during the 12th century. You’ll explore a vast open-air museum of history, including: • Erk-Kala (6th–5th centuries BC) — the oldest citadel in Merv, dating back to the Achaemenid period, • Gyaur-Kala (3rd century BC – 3rd century AD) — the Hellenistic city with Buddhist and Zoroastrian remains, • Sultan Kala (9th century AD) — the Islamic heart of the medieval city, • The monumental Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar (12th century) — with its stunning turquoise dome visible from miles away, • Muhammet Ibn Zayd, Yusuf Hamadani, and Askhabs Mausoleums — spiritual sites of Sufi and early Islamic heritage, • Shahriar Ark, Small Sultan Kala, Abdulla Khan Kala, and Bayramali Khan Kala — later fortresses and royal residences that show the evolution of power and architecture over centuries. After immersing yourself in this vast tapestry of civilizations, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant with regional specialties. Check in at your hotel and take time to relax before we continue exploring the modern charm of Mary city. Visit: • The Mary Regional Museum, featuring rich collections of archaeological findings, traditional crafts, and historical exhibits, • The city’s Orthodox Church, offering insight into Mary’s multicultural past, • The newly built grand mosque, symbolizing spiritual life in the region, • And the local bazaar, where you’ll witness daily life, taste local sweets, and interact with friendly vendors.
