The Pamir Highway reaches altitudes of 4,655 m, so some travelers may experience mild altitude symptoms. We recommend arriving well-rested and staying hydrated. Bring a warm jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, reusable water bottle, personal medications, and a power bank. Weather in the Pamirs can change quickly, even in summer. ATMs are rare outside major towns, so carry enough cash in Tajik Somoni or US Dollars. A passport and GBAO permit are required for this route.
