Day 1: Astana, Kazakhstan to National Park Burabay, Kazakhstan

One-Day Tour to Burabay National Park from Astana Join me on an unforgettable journey to Burabay National Park, often called the "Kazakh Switzerland" for its breathtaking landscapes, sacred history, and rich nomadic heritage. Morning Departure We start our day in the morning, picking you up directly from your accommodation in Astana. Our drive to Burabay takes around 2.5 hours through the open Kazakh steppe, gradually giving way to forests, hills, and shimmering lakes. Stop 1: Kenesary Cave Hike Our first stop will be a hike to Kenesary Cave, one of the region’s most historically and culturally significant sites. This natural wonder is closely linked to Kenesary Khan, a revered Kazakh ruler and freedom fighter. Known for his bravery and deep love for the land, Kenesary often hunted in these very hills and spent nights at the base of the cave’s hill. What makes the cave unique is its striking resemblance to a traditional Kazakh yurt—a circular chamber with a natural opening at the top, symbolizing the *shanyrak*, the sacred crown of the yurt. A stone-paved trail leads us to a panoramic viewpoint over Auliekol (Holy Lake), where the mirror-like water reflects the surrounding cliffs and forests. Hiking distance: 6 km round trip Duration: 1–1.5 hours Difficulty: Moderate – suitable for most fitness levels Stop 2: Museum of Nature of Burabay National Park Next, we’ll visit the Museum of Nature, where you’ll discover the park’s remarkable biodiversity. The exhibits showcase native wildlife, flora, and fauna—many of which are endangered and listed in the Red Book. It's an excellent place to deepen your appreciation for the region's ecological and cultural value. Stop 3: Lunch We'll enjoy lunch at one of the area’s best local restaurants, offering traditional Kazakh cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. Stop 4: Scenic Spots in Burabay National Park After lunch, we’ll enter deeper into the park to witness its natural wonders: Dancing Birches Grove – a unique section of forest where the birch trees appear to sway and twist as if in motion. Bolektau Mountain Viewpoint – just a short 147-meter ascent brings us to a panoramic observation deck. From here, we’ll take in stunning views of Lake Borovoe, Lake Big Chebachye, Zhumbaktas Rock, and Mount Okzhetpes. Stop 5: Okzhetpes Cliff & Zhumbaktas Rock We’ll visit the iconic Okzhetpes Cliff ("Inaccessible to Arrows") whose shape resembles an elephant calf, and Zhumbaktas Rock ("Riddle Stone"), which takes the form of a mysterious sphinx. You can walk around, take photos, or hike to nearby viewpoints for incredible perspectives. Stop 6: Abylai Khan Glade This historic meadow is named after the famous Kazakh khan, Abylai Khan. Here, you can learn more about Kazakh leadership and heritage. We’ll also enjoy a tasting of koumiss—fermented mare’s milk, a traditional nomadic drink of the Kazakh steppe. Stop 7: Imanaevsky Waterfall Our next destination is the peaceful Imanaevsky Waterfall, also known as Imanaevsky Spring—a 2-meter cascade hidden within the “Grove of Dancing Birches.” The 1.5 km trail to the waterfall is gentle and family-friendly. From spring to autumn, this lush path offers a refreshing walk through nature, ending at a quiet stream that flows into Lake Borovoe. Stop 8: Taskamal Megalithic structure Deep in the Burabay district of Akmola region lies the fascinating Taskamal complex — a site that continues to amaze both visitors and archaeologists alike. At the heart of the complex stands a giant megalithic wall, built from massive granite blocks, along with a central elevated platform, carefully designed access ramps, an outer terrace, and a number of enigmatic stone stelae whose meaning still remains a mystery. You’ll also find ancient petroglyphs and carved reliefs scattered across the site, perhaps hiding clues about the beliefs and rituals of the people who once lived here. Recent archaeological studies suggest that this monument may have served as a sacred place for gold miners as far back as the 2nd millennium BC, hinting at its deep spiritual and economic significance in early Kazakh history. Stop 9: Botai-Burabay Museum We will then explore the Botai-Burabay Museum, an open-air archaeological site dedicated to the ancient Botai culture (3700–3100 BC). Here you’ll see seven reconstructed Neolithic dwellings and real artifacts from one of the world’s first horse-breeding societies. This site provides powerful evidence of the first domesticated horses and offers a vivid glimpse into prehistoric life on the Kazakh steppe. Stop 10: Optional Visit to Eagle Hunter If available, we’ll make a short stop to meet a local eagle hunter and his magnificent golden eagle. I’ll explain the traditions of Kazakh eagle hunting, a proud nomadic skill passed down through generations. Stop 11: Visit to Local Kazakh Family Our final experience of the day is a warm visit to a local Kazakh family. You'll enjoy homemade Kazakh dishes and gain a real understanding of the nomadic lifestyle, values, and hospitality. I will guide you through every part of this cultural exchange. Evening Return to Astana After a full and enriching day, we drive back to Astana in the evening. Expect to return around 8–9 PM, filled with unforgettable impressions of Kazakhstan’s nature, culture, and people.
