Cold War Legacy Tour From Ust-Kamenogorsk Oskemen

Day 1: Ust'-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan

First, we visit the shelter against atomic bombing. It is built within a mountain in late 1980's. Works were never completed, so walking in it will be quite incomfortable through some places (several distances, in total about 30 minutes). The rest is much better. Due to location it constantly has snow, ice or melting water inside. Of course it is quite cold inside even in the summer, still about +5 degrees. Rubber boots and warm coats or sweaters will be provided. The shelter has several corridors and galleries, premises for diesel generator and pipes for water supply. At the ceiling cable hooks still hang, but everything else is stolen by scavengers. The walls were never completed, still not covered with any material, pure rock around. Because of fog making good photographies is not easy. So I display here only small part of what impressed me so much. After exiting you will enjoy beautiful view of nature around. The next stop is abandoned refinery for tantalum and tin and the mine on the way. The enterprise was stopped in late 1990's, since then almost all population left, but still about 30 persons live there. Talking to them is quite intersting, they can tell interesting stories about their life. Whole tour goes across beautiful lands of Altai mountains. You will see a lot of wild nature.
