Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Dushanbe, Tajikistan to Darvoz, Tajikistan
Day 1. 10.07.2023. Dushanbe – Kalai-Khumb. 355km 6-8 hours of driving After arriving in Dushanbe from Fan mountains, some guests might need to buy something they need. Heading to Kalai Khumb, the Pamirs via Kulyab. 6-8 hours. On the way stop to see Nurek water reservoir and Hulbuk Fortress. FROM THE NINTH TO 12TH centuries, Hulbuk was one of the biggest cities in Central Asia. There, a citadel guarded the western entrance of the Pamir Highway and the nearby salt mines of Khoja Mumin.Two palaces were built inside the citadel; the lower palace in the ninth and 10th centuries and the upper in the 11th and 12th centuries. But when the kingdom collapsed, so did the citadel. It became overrun by Mongols and Turkish tribes. In the centuries afterward, a new market town, Kulob, was founded nearby. Day 2: Darvoz, Tajikistan to Khorog, Tajikistan
Day 2. Kalai-Khumb – Khorog. 250km. 7-8 hours of driving, the road is not so good. Departing Kalai-Khumb (Darvaz) and heading to Khorog. Acclimatization in Khorog and preparation for next day. Visiting Khorog Regional museum, Khorog City Park, famous Khorog Botanic Garden and PECTA Tourism Information Center. Khorog (a.k.aHorog, Khoroq, Khorogh, Khorugh, or Xoroq) is an administrative center of Gorno-Badakhshan region, and the only city in Pamir. It is located approximately in the middle of the Pamir Highway: 600km to Dushanbe and 730km to Osh in Kyrgyzstan. In Khorog the Pamir highway branches out: the northern road goes along a deep mountain gorge straight to Murgab, and the southern one leads to the Wakhan corridor, the most picturesque part of the road, where historical monuments and picturesque villages have been preserved. Thus, Khorog is a touristic center of Pamir with all routes passing through it. Located at the height of 2200 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest cities in the post-Soviet territory and the highest city in Tajikistan. Day 3: Khorog, Tajikistan to Zong, Zarnisor, Tajikistan
Day 3. Khorog–Ishkashim - Wakhan Corridor/Langar. 246km. 10-12 hours driving with stops. On the way visit Garm Chashma hot spring, to see lapis lazuli mine from distance in Sist village, visit Kah-kaha fortress, Sufi MuborakiWakhoni Museum in Yamg, Budha stupa in Vrang and go to hot spring Bibi Fatina and Yamchun Fort. Night in Sash guesthouse in Zong village. The corridor was formed by an 1893 agreement between the British Empire (British India) and Afghanistan, creating the Durand Line. This narrow strip acted as a buffer zone between the Russian Empire and the British Empire (the regions of Russian Turkestan, now in Tajikistan, and the part of British India now in Pakistan and the contested region of Gilgit-Baltistan). Its eastern end bordered China's Xinjiang region, then ruled by the Qing dynasty. Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of day – 2100m in Khorog, end of day – Langar 2800m.
Day 4: Zong, Zarnisor, Tajikistan to Murghab, Tajikistan
Day 4. Zong – Bulunkul /Yashikul lakes – Murghab. 275km 10-12 hours of driving. Driving to Bulunkul (coldest place in Tajikistan) along Pamir River via Khargush Pass (4344 m). Drive to Yashilkul (Green) lake to enjoy the beauty of the lake. Visiting local main school head teacher and she talks about her activities. Driving to Alichur through Sasykul and Tuzkul lakes, to observe and see beautiful landscape. In the afternoon continue driving to Murghab. Overnight in a homestay/hotel in Murgab. Murghob District (Tajik: Ноҳияи Мурғоб) is a district in Tajikistan, occupying the eastern two-thirds of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). The area of Murghob District is 37,300 km2, covering 26 percent of Tajikistan's soil, but only 0.17% of its population.Murghob District borders on Kyrgyzstan to the north, China to the east, and Afghanistan to the south.The population of Murghob District is 15,900 (1 January 2020 estimate). Day 5: Murghab, Tajikistan
Day 5. Murghab – Rangkul Lake – Karakul lake/village-Murghab. 320km 8-10 hours of driving. Departing Murghab and driving to Rangkul and Shorkul lakes. Good chance to see the rare Indian goose (Anser Indicus). In the afternoon heading towards the biggest lake in Tajikistan – Karakul lake (‘Black lake’), close to Tajik –Kyrgyz border. Continue driving to Karakul village via the highest point of the Pamir Highway, Ak-Baital pass (4656 m). Usually travelers stop there and take pictures and enjoy the view around the pass. Short de tour from Karakul village to see the Karaart geoglyphs (8th-3rd century BC). In the evening driving back to Murghab. Overnight in a homestay in Murghab village. Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of day – 3630m in Murgab highest point – 4656m on Ak-Baital pass, end of day – 3930m in Karakul.
Day 6: Murghab, Tajikistan to Khorog, Tajikistan
Day 6. Murgab –Alichur- Khorog (via Jelondi hot spring and Ghund valley). 360 km. Drive to Shakhty pre-historic cave paintings and Shorbuloq observatory. If the weather is clear. Then you can see Mustaq Ata peak in China. Continue driving to Alichur and then through Khargush pass 4343 meter to Jelondi hot spring. Short stop in sanatorium to take bath and having lunch there. Continue driving to Khrog through Ghund valley. Night in Khorog. Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of day – 3630m in Murgab highest point – 4271 m on Koytezak pass, end of day – 2100m in Khorog.
Day 7: Khorog, Tajikistan to Homestay in Jizev Village, Rŭshan, Tajikistan
Day 7. Khorog– Rushan- Bartang valley, up to the bridge-Jizev. 100km. Departing Khorog for Bartang valley. Drive up to the bridge on Bartang River, after Baghu village. The driver will stay with the car on the bridge and travelers start trekking to the direction of Jizev village. The distance is about 7 km and usually takes 2.5 – 3 hours. In the village you can stay in a home stay or in tents. The people are very kind and happy to welcome guests. Spend some time around the village and enjoy the beauty of the landscape and lakes. There is an interesting case there: in the village of Jizev, local residents load a donkey, and he alone descends to the bridge. On the bridge, someone local comes up to unload the donkey and load the donkey with other things, such as a sack of flour, and he goes back to the village on his own. Day 8: Homestay in Jizev Village, Rŭshan, Tajikistan to Khijez Base Pahlavon Camp, Rŭshan, Tajikistan
Day 8. Jizev - Bridge – Khijez village 10 km (trekking day). Walking down to the bridge, take your seats and drive to upper Bartang valley, up to Khijez village. Go for trekking to Ravmed village direction, not so hard and you can go and come back, as much as you want and can, the landscape is very beautiful. By the end of the day you should be back to guesthouse in Khijez. Bartang valley is one of the wildest valley and most remote path of crossing Pamir mountain. If you love bad unconventional roads, landslides, lot of difficulties yet full of solitude adventure then Bartang valley is must for your kind of travellers. Laid in the western Pamir range, Bartang valley will surely stay in your memory forever once you leave this amazing place in Tajikistan. So if your excitement level is going high already then let us explore this nature's gift Bartang valley little more. Day 9: Khijez Base Pahlavon Camp, Rŭshan, Tajikistan to Darvoz, Tajikistan
Day 9. Khijez – Rushan - Darvaz. 265km. 8-9 hours drive. After having breakfast and saying good bye to the family of guesthouse, driving back to Rushan district center. On the way you will see local people busy with their daily life activities. On the way stop in Rushan to see Womar Fort. Night in Darvaz. Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of day – 2600m in Khijez, end of day –1200 m in Darvaz city.
Day 10: Darvoz, Tajikistan to Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Day 10. Darvaz- Dushanbe. 305 km, 13-15 hours trekking and drive. In Darvaz, before starting drive, the driver should check with local authorities, the condition of the road through Sagirdasht Pass 3252m and Tavildara ditrict. Sometimes this road might be closed due to snow melting, landslide or flooding. The landscape is very beautiful and not many cars on the way. In Obi Garm village from distance watch the construction of Rogun Hydro Power Station. Rogun has been voted the highest dam in the world - 335 meters (1,099 feet) high - but that's the design height. If the road condition is not good, better go through South route, through Kulyab.
