To follow in the footsteps of dinosaurs and feel the breath of ancient Earth — to see the places where giants lived millions of years ago and discover the fascinating natural world of the Shirkent Nature Reserve.
Our journey begins with a scenic drive from Dushanbe through the mountain landscapes of Varzob and the Shirkent Valley. Along the way, we share stories about the region’s geological features and explain how real dinosaur footprints were discovered here.Upon arrival at the reserve, a hiking route to the ancient tracks awaits us — approximately 2.5 hours one way. The trek takes us along rocky paths, gorges, and mountain slopes, gradually immersing us in the atmosphere of untouched nature. The highlight of the route is a series of stone slabs bearing dinosaur footprints that are more than 150 million years old. More than 400 preserved footprints have been discovered in the Shirkent Nature Reserve — some of the most clearly visible dinosaur tracks in Asia. We explain how these traces survived for millions of years, what species of ancient creatures once lived here, and why Shirkent is considered one of the most unique places in Central Asia. After the rewarding ascent, we take a break for rest, photos, and a light snack or lunch (by arrangement). In clear weather, breathtaking panoramic views of the valley open before us. We return along the same route, with opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints to take photos and share impressions of this journey into deep time
