Day 1: Border Crossing & The Gates of Hell (Khiva – Dashoguz – Darvaza) Morning & Afternoon: Departure from Khiva toward the Shavat/Dashoguz border crossing. Meet your local guide at the Turkmen border, complete customs clearance, and embark on a scenic overland expedition through Dashoguz directly into the vast Karakum Desert. Evening: Arrive at the iconic Darvaza Gas Crater ("Gates of Hell") as the sun sets over the dunes. Check into a traditional yurt camp on the crater’s edge. Night: Savor an authentic open-fire barbecue dinner cooked over desert embers. Enjoy nighttime photography around the glowing abyss beneath the starry desert sky.
Day 2: Caravan Route & The City of White Marble (Darvaza – Ashgabat) Morning: Enjoy an open-air camp breakfast with fresh tea, then begin the drive south across the desert toward Ashgabat. Afternoon: Arrive in the Turkmen capital, check into your hotel, and take time to refresh. Late Afternoon & Evening: Launch your comprehensive city tour across the city of white marble: National Museum of Turkmenistan: Explore world-class archaeological collections, gold artifacts, and ancient rhytons from the Parthian era. Gulistan (Russian Bazaar): Immerse yourself in local culture, sample traditional dried fruits, and shop for hand-knotted carpets and silver jewelry. Arch of Neutrality & Monument of Independence: Admire the soaring marble monuments and city views as night falls. Alem Entertainment Center: Visit the world’s largest indoor Ferris wheel and bright city avenues.
Day 3: Departure from Ashgabat Morning: Early hotel check-out and private transfer to Ashgabat International Airport (ASB) for your departure flight home.
Visas & Permits: Official Letter of Invitation (LOI), migration registration, and all entry permit fees. Accommodations: 1 night in a desert yurt at Darvaza + 1 night in an Ashgabat hotel. Meals: Barbecue dinner at the crater camp, plus daily camp and hotel breakfasts. Guide & Transport: 2 days of private A/C vehicle transport and a licensed local guide. Hydration: Complimentary bottled water daily (1L per person).
Turkmenistan Entry Visa Fee: $55 – $85 USD (depends on nationality, paid in cash at the border). Border COVID Rapid Test: ~$30 – $33 USD (mandatory health check fee at the border crossing). Personal Travel Insurance: Recommended to cover general medical and trip interruptions. Personal Expenses: Souvenirs, extra snacks/drinks, alcoholic beverages, and tips.
Border Cash Required: Visa ($55–$85 USD) and mandatory PCR test (~$31–$33 USD) must be paid in USD cash at the border crossing. Notes must be crisp, clean, and uncreased (printed post-2013). Dress & Culture: Dress respectfully—pack comfortable, covered clothing for city sights and mosques, plus warm layers for cold desert nights at the crater.
