As your permits are being checked for the trip tomorrow, you will visit 3 out of 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu Valley. The three world heritage sites are Pashupatinath Temple, Bouddhanath Stupa, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The Pashupatinath Temple and Bouddhanath Stupa are the religious heritage site representing Hindu and Buddhist religions respectively and Bhaktapur Durbar Square is one of the three Durbar Square (Royal Courtyard) where Malla dynasties used to live in. The Durbar Square is a historical heritage of Nepal. Pashupatinath temple is a holy abode for all the Hindu people and especially Shiva devotees from around the world. The temple is not a single building but a temple complex with over 500 shrines and temples surrounding the main temple of Lord Shiva. The temples and shrines are all designed in shikhara or pagoda styles. Not only the temples, but the temple complex is the final resting place for the dead. There is a crematory on the banks of Holy River Bagmati which encompasses the Pashupatinath area. The next site is Bouddhanath Stupa, a large dome-shaped white structure that is over 30 meters tall. As every stupa has, there are prayer flags and prayer wheels around the structure. The spire at the top has the eyes of Buddha around the four sides representing that Buddha sees all. The area around the stupa is filled with many shops and eateries catering to the needs of visitors. The final site to visit is Bhaktapur Durbar Square located in the city of Bhaktapur. Also called the city of devotees, Bhaktapur City is a museum in itself. There are various ponds and temples located in every nook and cranny of Bhaktapur. We will pass by some of these ponds and reach Bhaktapur Durbar Square. There are many important structures in Bhaktapur.
