Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Astana, Kazakhstan to Kalachi, Kazakhstan
Through years 2013-2015 many inhabitants of Kalachi and Krasnogorskoye villages were vulnerable to unknown illness with strange symptoms. Many people would suddenly fall asleep for several days. As possible reasons radiation levels and emission of Radon were examined at former uranium mine nearby. In this tour we can talk to locals, stay overnight in that village and try to find credible version of mystery. Since Soviet times uranium mine operated near both villages, it was shut down by the Y’1994. Emissions or gamma rays and Radon were considered first as a cause of sleep illness. We can visit abandoned mine and measure gamma rays to make our own opinion.
Day 2: Kalachi, Kazakhstan to Astana, Kazakhstan
In terms of radiation safety, both villages and even uranium mine itself are clean, as safe as it can be. But to be precise, we will measure levels of gamma rays there. Measuring Radon is very costly, but we have recent numbers. So the adventure is safe. As for logistics, we will go 430 km to the North West from Astana. The road is good except last 43 km. We overnight in the village, next morning return to Astana. If we move fast enough, it is possible to see more sightseeing on the way back.
