Tanbaly Petroglyphs Day Trip

5,000 years ago, someone stood on this rock and carved these images into stone. We still don't know everything they meant — but standing here, you feel it.

Tanbaly is not a museum. There are no walls, no glass cases, no audio guides. It is an open canyon in the Chu-Ili mountains, 170 kilometres from Almaty, where ancient people came for thousands of years to mark this place as sacred. The Bronze Age. The Iron Age. The Saka warriors. The medieval nomads. Layer upon layer upon layer — all on the same rocks, under the same sky.

The most famous images are the sun-headed deities — figures with human bodies and heads radiating light like the sun. No one knows exactly who they were. Gods? Priests? Something in between? The mystery is part of the experience.
