This trekking journey will lead you through the renowned Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, situated in the far western expanse of Mongolia, towards the spectacular Altai Mountain Range. The region is characterized by its dramatic and unspoiled landscapes, offering a sense of profound remoteness and natural grandeur. During the trek, you will have the unique opportunity to explore and traverse through expansive, majestic terrain, either on foot or horseback. In addition to the natural splendor, the experience provides a rare cultural immersion, allowing you to engage with the Kazakh and Tuvan nomadic communities. You will gain a deep understanding of their centuries-old traditions, way of life, and rich cultural practices, offering a comprehensive view of Mongolia’s diverse heritage.
**Day 1: Tsagaan Gol Valley** Arrive in Ulgii, where you will meet your English-speaking guide, cook, and driver. We will head to Tavan Bogd National Park as soon as possible, passing through amazing wilderness. The rocky plains will gradually turn into green valleys, and then we will see the rugged peaks of the Altai Mountains and the wild landscapes of Tavan Bogd National Park. We’ll stop for lunch in the village of Tsengel. Later, near the sacred Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain, home to many Tuvan nomads, we will set up camp in the Tsagaan Gol Valley. Before sunset, there will be time for a hike to a beautiful lake in the valley.
DAY 2. Horseriding After breakfast, we will ride 9 km to a hill offering a magnificent view of the snow-capped Tavanbogd mountains and Mount Khuiten, Mongolia’s highest peak at 4,374 meters. You'll also have the chance to walk on Potanin Glacier, the longest in Mongolia. We will then ride back to our camp, home to the Tuvan people, an ethnic minority with their own language. The Tuvans practice both Buddhism and Shamanism. You'll have the opportunity to meet them and try their dairy products, including milk vodka made from Yak milk.
Shiveet Mount – Har Salaa Valley Today, we will hike to the start of the Khara Airykh Valley, passing through ancient petroglyphs at the sacred Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain. Along the way, we’ll cross beautiful mountain passes, including a hill with a local "Ovoo" (a sacred stone mound in Mongolian shamanic tradition). We’ll also climb to the top of Shiveet Mountain to look for wildlife, such as ibexes. After about 5 hours of hiking, we will arrive at the Har Salaa (Black Valley), where our gear will be transported by car. Drive to Hoton Lake Area – WhiteWater Valley After breakfast, we set off towards the enchanting Hoton Lake region, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. Along the journey, we’ll pause for photos and breaks, taking in the vast, snow-capped mountains, lush forests, and endless blue skies. By mid-day, we’ll arrive at the serene White Water Valley, where we will set up camp. The lake, abundant with fish and migratory birds, offers a wonderful opportunity for birdwatching. As evening falls, you’ll witness a stunning sunset, casting golden hues across the valley, a sight for which this place is famous. Our campsite rests near the Chinese border, offering a peaceful night under the stars. Accommodation: Tent Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Total distance: 180 km, ~5 hours
DAY 5: Elk Valley After breakfast, we embark on a scenic 16 km hike toward the picturesque Khoton Lake and the Elikti River. Along the way, you'll be surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Mongolia's remote wilderness. Upon reaching the lake, we’ll meet our driver and set up camp along its tranquil shores. Towering above us will be the snow-covered Ikh Turgen Mountain, a majestic backdrop. At this point, we are only 10 km from the Chinese border, in an area where numerous Kazakh herdsmen make their summer homes. The Kazakh people are known for their warmth and hospitality, often inviting visitors into their traditional Gers (yurts). We will visit some of these nomadic families, offering a unique opportunity to experience their culture, customs, and everyday life. As the day ends, you’ll be treated to a mesmerizing sunset over the vast landscapes of Western Mongolia. Later, beneath a sky filled with countless stars, you’ll experience the calm beauty of this remote, untouched region.
Day 6. Hike to Machine Kabak Today, we will trek to a scenic spot known as Machine Kabak by the local nomads. We’ll arrive at our destination by early afternoon. After a refreshing break and lunch, we can hike up a nearby mountain, which takes about an hour. From the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. There will be an opportunity to fish in the lake and visit ancient Turkic Stone Men statues, as well as nearby burial sites. In the evening, we will gather around a bonfire. This area is also perfect for birdwatching. Accommodation: Tent Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Total distance: 7.5 km, ~4 hours
After breakfast, we will drive approximately 8 km to the entrance of the Baga Turgen Valley, a place known for its stunning natural beauty. From there, we’ll embark on a 5 km hike deeper into the valley, where we’ll be rewarded with the sight of three breathtaking waterfalls cascading down the rocky landscape. The sound of the rushing water and the pristine environment create a serene and picturesque setting. As we explore, you’ll notice the valley is rich in wild fruits, with red currants, black currants, and gooseberries growing in abundance along the trail. The natural bounty of the area adds to its charm. The valley is located just 3 km from the Chinese border, adding a sense of remoteness and adventure to the experience. Along the way, we will also visit ancient Turkic Stone Men statues, which are fascinating historical relics, as well as nearby burial sites that speak to the deep history of the region. These stone carvings and burial grounds offer a glimpse into the lives of the ancient peoples who once roamed this land. As the day comes to a close, we’ll gather around a bonfire to celebrate the final night of our journey. The warmth of the fire, under the expansive starry sky, will be the perfect setting to reflect on the adventure and enjoy the camaraderie of the group.
After breakfast, we will head back to Ulgii, traveling through the scenic Khovd River Valley. You’ll also have the chance to meet an Eagle Hunter and discover the ancient Kazakh tradition of hunting with Golden Eagles. In the evening, you’ll check into a hotel and enjoy a traditional Kazakh musical performance, followed by dinner at one of the renowned local restaurants. After breakfast, we will assist you with your final preparations before departing for the airport. During the journey, you can reflect on the incredible experiences you've had, from hiking through breathtaking landscapes to meeting local nomadic families. We will take you to the airport in Ulgii, where you'll have the opportunity to reminisce about the stunning views of the Khovd River Valley and the unforgettable encounter with the Eagle Hunter and his magnificent Golden Eagles. Once we arrive at the airport, our team will ensure a smooth check-in process for your flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Take a moment to soak in the surroundings and appreciate the beauty of Western Mongolia one last time before boarding your flight.
