Embarking on a journey with a small child might seem daunting, especially when the destination is as remote and rugged as Mongolia. However, the allure of adventure and the desire to connect with ancestral roots can make such a trip not only feasible but also incredibly rewarding. Here's how you can navigate the challenges and embrace the wonders of travelling to Mongolia with young children, creating unforgettable memories for your family.

Why Choose Mongolia for Your Family Adventure?

Mongolia, with its vast landscapes and rich nomadic heritage, offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience that goes beyond the ordinary tourist trails. From the majestic Altai Mountains to the serene beauty of its steppe, Mongolia is a land that promises adventure and cultural immersion. Our journey, with our 18-month-old son, took us from Graz, Austria, through Istanbul and Bishkek, finally reaching the heart of Western Mongolia: Ölgii. This trip was more than a vacation; it was a pilgrimage to the homeland of ancestors, an opportunity too precious to postpone.

Preparing for the Mongolian Expedition

Travelling to Mongolia in July means preparing for all weather conditions. The summers can be warm, but mountainous regions are unpredictable. Packing warm clothes, including a winter jacket, and waterproof shoes for your child is essential. Nights can get particularly cold, so merino wool undergarments and cashmere socks are advisable. Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses to protect against the strong mountain sun.

Regarding essentials, pack favorite snacks that might comfort your child in times of need. Medications and a comprehensive first-aid kit, after consulting with your pediatrician, are crucial. Sunscreen, painkillers, mosquito repellent, and baby hygiene products should fill your travel bag alongside toys and books to entertain during long journeys.

The Right Guide Makes All the Difference

For our adventure, we opted for a travel arrangement that included three cars, two drivers, and a guide/cook. This setup not only provided comfort but ensured we had all necessary gear and local insights. Flexibility is key in Mongolia, as plans can change rapidly. A knowledgeable guide who understands your family’s needs can significantly enhance your experience.

Surviving Long Flights with a Toddler

Reaching Mongolia involved navigating through five flights, a daunting prospect with a small child. To make air travel bearable, we planned extended airport layovers, allowing ample time for unexpected needs. A baby carrier proved invaluable, especially for boarding and hiking. Booking seats with extra legroom and requesting a baby bassinet for sleeping can make the journey more comfortable for everyone.

Daily Life in Mongolia: Embracing Nomadic Traditions

Staying with local families in yurts offered an authentic glimpse into Mongolian life. Adapting to the local schedule, which often meant later nights and mornings, helped us manage jet lag and immerse in the culture. Safety precautions around the yurt’s oven and ensuring comfortable sleeping arrangements were key. Daily hygiene was managed with wet wipes and bucket baths, maintaining a sense of routine amidst the adventure.

Food and Dietary Considerations

Mongolian cuisine, primarily dairy and meat-based, might be challenging for young palates. However, local markets in Ölgii provide a variety of foods, allowing some flexibility in meals. Ensuring all dairy products are cooked and opting for a guide with cooking skills can make mealtimes smoother.

Engaging Activities for Kids

Mongolia is a playground for children, with endless opportunities to interact with nature and local children. From watching traditional eagle hunting to playing football with new friends, our son was never short of entertainment. The communal aspect of Mongolian life, with its emphasis on outdoor activities and animal watching, ensured that our son was engaged and enriched by the experience.

A Call to Adventure for Families

Our journey to Mongolia with a small child was not without its challenges, but the rewards far outweighed the inconveniences. The stunning landscapes, the warmth of the Mongolian people, and the joy of experiencing such a unique culture as a family were unparalleled.

Are you ready to embark on an unforgettable family adventure to Mongolia? Let the vastness of the Mongolian steppe be your playground and its people your guides to a world of discovery. Don't let the logistics hold you back; with the right preparation, a journey to Mongolia can be an enriching experience for travellers of all ages.
