Central Asia is an area which has an extreme continental and dry climate. In the south there are big deserts like Karakum, Kyzyklum, Taklamakan and the Gobi. In the north there are the treeless steppes including the Kazakh steppe, the Kuulanda steppe and the Mongolian Steppe. In the south and east are the big mountain ranges like the Tian Shan, the Altai and the Pamir mountains.
Central Asia has something to offer all year round. It all depends on your activities. Do you want to go hiking in the mountains? Or swimming in the lakes? Or do you want to visit the Silk Road cities or like to ski? Here are some recommendations when it is the best time to travel to Central Asia.
Best time to visit Kazakhstan: May - September
Between Mai and September, the temperature in most areas is pretty good to handle. Spring is a very pleasant time for a visit when everything including the desert is blooming. The southern parts can be very hot in summer meaning over 40 degrees. If you want to do some trekking in south and east Kazakhstan, then the right time would be July and August because otherwise there might still be too much snow around. The winter can be bitter cold especially in the steppes around Astana. But if you want to do some skiing, then visit Kazakhstan between December and March. Browse Kazakhstan Tours.
Best time to visit Kyrgyzstan: April - October
The months April and May are especially nice because the whole country is blooming. If you want to do some trekking in Kyrgyzstan then the best months are July and August. The temperature is nice at this time and sleeping in Yurts is pleasant because it is not too cold at night. You'll love the colors in autumn. If you come to Kyrgyzstan for ski tours then come in December until March when there is a lot of snow in the mountains. Browse Kyrgyzstan Tours.
Best time to visit Tajikistan: May - September
In Spring the chance that there is still a lot of snow in the Pamir and Fan Mountains is quite high. Therefore travelling to Tajikistan before May does not make a lot of sense because most people want to drive the Pamir Hightway and/or go hiking in the mountains. Summers can get warm in the lower areas but up in the mountain, there is always a chance that it is getting chilly because of the wind. Humidity is generally low and the sun is strong. Best time to visit Turkmenistan: April - May/September - October
In the months April/May and September/October the temperatures in Turkmenistan are nice and pleasant. Autumn is also a good time to visit because of the harvest season. Then, the markets are full with fresh fruits and vegetables. The summers and winters should best be avoided because it is either too hot or too cold. Browse Turkmenistan Tours.
Best time to visit Uzbekistan: May - June/September - November
Mai and June as well as September until November are the best months to visit the Silk Road cities because the weather is mild and dry. July and August can be pretty hot in the cities, but it's just right for some trekking in the mountains. Winters are as well very cold and rather unpleasant for a visit. Browse Uzbekistan Tours.
