Now Kazakhstan is not much different from anywhere in the world in terms of mass psychology and expectations. Be nice, courteous yet insistent, express interest in the local culture, learn and use some Kazakh words and phrases (Kazakh is not Russian, another official language of Kazakhstan). Depending on your time frame and reason for visit, you can explore and discover many, many, MANY exciting things and places in Kazakhstan.

Specific do's and don't's:

Do's:

  • To truly experience Kazakhstan visit Almaty, Nur-Sultan, South Kazakhstan (Taraz, Shymkent, Turkestan, Kyzylorda), Aktau, North (Borovoe, Shychye), East Kazakhstan (mountains and lakes), West Kazakhstan and more
  • Talk to people (as I suggested, pick up some generic words and everyday phrases like Salem, Kalyn kalay?, Kushti, Rahmet, Sau bolynyz, Kanshadan? etc.)
  • Try local food and drinks (all organic, probably top-5 most natural and organic food anywhere)
  • Take pics and maybe shoot a video or two  (maybe even pull a nice prank on locals)
  • Go see Dimash Kudaibergen live
  • Bargain, always bargain. Taxis, bazaars, souvenir shops etc.
  • Get all your papers right
  • Act confilite (confident + polite lol)

Don'ts

  • Initiate talks about/mention Borat (nobody really cares, but it only creates an impression of you as a commoner wanderer)
  • Drink tap water (not that it is uranium, but it is really a good health practice to not drink tap water anywhere)
  • Go out with your bladder full (serious shortage of public restrooms in most places)
  • There are more do's and don'ts but you'll be fine with just the common-sense stuff taken care of.

Welcome to the Great Steppe and enjoy your stay!
