Embarking on a Journey to Western Mongolia

In the autumn of 2019, we embarked on a mission to Bayan-Ulghii, Mongolia's westernmost province. Our goal was twofold: to distribute essential hygiene and school supplies to children in need at a local school dormitory, and to reconnect with a nomadic eagle-hunting family we collaborate with in the secluded Altai county, approximately 120 km from the province's heart.

Asker Eagle Hunter

The Allure of Traditional Eagle Hunting

Eagle hunting, an ancient tradition revered by adventurers and culture enthusiasts alike, draws visitors to Mongolia's untouched western frontiers. Here, away from the bustling tourist spots, authentic eagle-hunting practices thrive within remote nomadic communities. Among these, Altai county stands out as a gem, home to the renowned eagle hunter Asker Ulikhpan and his family.

Asker Ulikhpan: A Legacy Born from the Kerey Tribe

Asker, a descendant of the Kerey tribe and a lineage of eagle hunters, was born in 1980 in the Shar Gobi region. Alongside his wife, Almagul, and their six children, Asker upholds the traditions passed down through generations. The family's nomadic life, moving with the seasons, provides a vivid backdrop to their rich cultural heritage.

A Life Interwoven with Nature and Tradition

Asker's expertise in eagle hunting is complemented by his life as a herder, tending to sheep, goats, cows, horses, and camels. His seasonal migrations between summer and autumn camps showcase Mongolia's stunning landscapes, from lush green valleys to majestic mountain vistas.

Passing the Torch: A Family Affair

Teaching his children the art of eagle hunting from a tender age, Asker has nurtured a new generation of hunters. By the age of eight, his children were adept at hunting with eagles, showcasing their skills on foxes and wolves. Their journey from capturing eaglets to participating in the prestigious Golden Eagle Festival is a testament to their dedication and skill.

Aigerim: A Rising Star

Aigerim, Asker's daughter, has become a sensation in the eagle hunting world. Her prowess, showcased annually at the Golden Eagle Festival, captivates audiences and has even caught the eye of National Geographic. Her connection with her eagle, guided by instinct and training, is a powerful symbol of the enduring legacy of Mongolian eagle hunting.

Discovering Altai County: A Land Untouched

Altai county, nestled in Mongolia's westernmost reaches, offers a glimpse into a world where ancient customs flourish amidst breathtaking scenery. The local Kazakh and Uriankhai nomads live in harmony with their environment, preserving a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.

An Invitation to Explore

We invite you to experience the untamed beauty and rich cultural tapestry of Mongolia through the eyes of the Ulikhpan family. Asker's story is not just about eagle hunting; it's a window into a lifestyle that harmonizes with nature, a tradition that beckons adventurers and cultural enthusiasts to explore the heart of Mongolia.
