Working from a skeletal, 5-day itinerary, Habil developed a pretty well-considered, competitively priced tour program aimed at picking out the highlights on the various legs of the journey. The tour outline was Baku-Gabala-Ganja-Lankaran-Baku. We managed to fit in an interlude in Sheki along the way from Gabala to Ganja. Habil is a very capable, thinking driver who (unlike many of his compatriots!) takes no unnecessary risks but doesn’t lose much time either. He is full of suggestions to make the trip easier or more enjoyable, and through experience has something of a catalogue of friendly locations along the way. He can at times act without consultation, sometimes to one’s advantage, and sometimes not, when making choices of when and where to stop. I didn’t share his inclination toward late lunches and sometimes remonstrated with him about taking rest breaks to alleviate driver fatigue.
Whatever, he is unfailingly helpful and considerate of his travellers’ requests, and goes out of his way to help with the “little things” that go with checking in and out of hotels, getting into attractions, and so on.
He is good company on the road. Habil has a great knowledge of his country’s history and a keen interest in contemporary affairs in the Caucasus and elsewhere. He is capable of lively conversation, although one has to be careful not to converse with him in “colloquial” English, nor of course to speak too fast. We nonetheless communicated effectively and I found him a great companion.
Even at and after the end of an enjoyable trip, Habil kept helping. He went completely out of his way to connect me with an excellent host in Nakhchivan, who also delivered a memorable tour of key attractions in that remarkable enclave.
So, all in all, I very much doubt one could do better than choose Habil to host their tailor-made, independent tour of Azerbaijan. Go on, give him a call.

Communication with Habil started about two months before our vacation and continued right up until the day we arrived, he was always friendly, helpful and quick to respond.
We wanted transfers to/from the airport (as arrived at 2:30am) and as promised there was Habil’s friend Shareef waiting for us at the airport to take us to our hotel, Habil was waiting for us at our hotel to take us back to the airport at 4:45am (booked for 5am)
We went to Azerbaijan specifically for New Year’s Eve celebrations, but we had arranged a few tours while we were there.
On our first tour we saw old and new Baku, this was a great introduction in Baku life and also helped us get our baring’s as well as learn about Azerbaijani culture, history and what it’s like to live in Baku.
Spending the day at ‘Gobustan’, admiring the 20,000 year old rock art was amazing! Also seeing the mud volcanoes in Keyraki was amongst our highlights, we also went to Yanardag which was brilliant, (you don’t need to spend more than an hour there, but it’s fascinating to see!).
One important thing to me with guides is feeling comfortable to ask questions about the history and current affairs of the country you’re in, and we were more than made comfortable to do this, and as a result we learnt so much about Azerbaijan both historically and also what it’s like to grow up and living there.
Another important thing is that we were never felt under pressure for time, in reference to how much (or little) time we wanted to spend in certain area’s / places (this makes a HUGE difference), and even the little things like taking us to the supermarket, post office and shopping centre was never an issue.
It was a pleasure to spend my vacation with Habil and his friend Shareef and would highly recommend - See you both in Ireland one day! <3
