Private Wine Tour To Ismayilli

Shato Monolit Known as Shato (ie Chateau) Monolit, Ismayilli Wine´s Hajihatamli winery is a state of the art complex which aims to set new standards in Azerbaijani winemaking. Manager Elchin explained how his team had toured Europe visiting wine fairs to learn about the processes, realizing that simply resurrecting Soviet-style winemaking would be pointless in today´s interconnected world. They visited wineries in France, Germany, and Italy looking for inspiration and eventually employed Moldovan wine specialist Gheorghe Arpentin to help them get the best possible results. This approach is already paying dividends - at the wine tasting salon of their co-owned Baku hotel (Monolit Plaza) we were proudly shown several of the accolades already won by the operation in its few years of operation - including a ´Wine of the Year´ nomination for their Alishan dry red at Yalta, 2010. Around 360 hectares of vines spread across the territories of three local villages. Already the winery´s production - some 300,000 bottles - is virtual of Azerbaijan´s national consumption so unsurprisingly the focus is on exports to Russia and Belarus. The grapes of choice are mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Georgian favorites Saperavi and Rkatsiteli, all grafted onto phylloxera-resistant American rootstock. There is also a test plot of archetypal native Medrese grapes. So far these have only produced a small batch of some 300 bottles, but management is happy with the experiment and plans to expand to make a quality wine that is more truly Azerbaijani. The equipment to do that, however, is certainly not local. The winery uses high tech French and Bulgarian vats and - unusually - has its own integrated bottling plant using empties laboriously transported all the way from Moldova. But what makes this plant unique in Azerbaijan is that it doubles as a tourist attraction.

For many centuries this village was cut off from civilization by hard-to-reach mountains with dangerous rocky cliffs. Nowadays there are about 380 houses, which are 200-300 years old. The houses are built closely: the roof of one house serves as a patio for another located above, it happened because of steep slopes surrounding the village. Inhabitants of Khinalig retained their traditional way of life, culture & original language.

State Historical-Artistic Reserve Gobustan is a unique monument of world importance and in the year 2007 has been included to the UNESCO World Heritage List. There is an area of 537 hectares of concentrated testimonies of the inhabitants of the region of the Stone Age era and subsequent periods with rock paintings, the human lot, tombstones, etc. Gobustan National Park: The archaeological side of Gobustan is very in with monuments. The reserve has more than 6,000 rock engravings dating back between 5,000 – 40,000 years. Visitors also view the remains of inhabited caves. Yanardag – One of the most famous and popular tourist places of the “eternal flame” in Azerbaijan is the mountain of Yanar Dag. Actually, it is rather a hill than a mountain, with natural gas burning on its slope from ancient times. People occupy the benches to watch the blazing hill in the evening when its sight is most effective. Ateshgah Temple – The temple of fire worshippers Ateshgah has located 30 km from the center of Baku and was revered at different times by Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs. This territory is known for such a unique natural phenomenon as burning natural gas outlets (underground gas coming onto surface contacts oxygen and lights up). The temple in its present state was constructed in the 17th-18th centuries. The pentagonal complex has an open courtyard with temple-altar in the center which was the place of pilgrimage for worshippers.
