Kolsai And Kaindy Lakes

We invite you to visit an unusual cascade of three Kulsai lakes, which are located in Kungei Alatau, in the northern part of the Tien Shan (about 310 kilometers from Almaty). The lakes proudly spread out over the territory of the Rayymbek district, 7 km from the Kyrgyz border. The road to them is not easy, but it is very interesting and exciting. First you need to drive through the city of Chilik, then you cross the tiny village of Nura, and then overcome the Kokpek gorge being 13 kilometers long. About 30 years ago, the road was completely destroyed by a catastrophic mudflow. But the specialists managed to repair and completely restore the path to the lakes. Then you pass the Toraigyr mountains and turn right, taking the path towards Zhalansh (a small village). The next point is Saty village. Here you drive three kilometers, and then you will see a decent asphalt road turning left. It will lead to the first of three lakes. The local alpine lakes are unique, they are simply called: Kulsai one, Kulsai two and Kulsai Three. The first reservoir is located at an altitude of about 1,818 meters above sea level, the second – at 2260 meters above, and the third – at an altitude of 2,850 meters. All lakes have decent depth. Each of the reservoirs is formed by the collapse of severe landslides. Because of them, the fast, stormy river stopped. It is curious that in all flowing lakes the water is quite dark; they are connected by the homonymous river. Here are more details about the three lakes.

Aksai Clove The Monastery

In 1921, after the revolution five outlaw monks left Verniy city (present Alma-Ata) and headed to the mountains. They didn’t want to submit to the new government, being aware of its attitude to religion and clergy. Initially the monks hid in the Medeu clove, but they were discovered. According to a legend, when further wandering in the mountains, they saw the light streaming from heaven to a certain place on earth. The monks decided that the Lord himself pointed them this place. Here they managed to dig a cave for worshipping and settled here. They had to eat very poorly: their diet consisted of berries and roots. Later, locals began to come to the monks. Faithful people from the city and local villages walked dozens of kilometers to pray to the God. The hermit monks realized that the more people came to them, the higher was the chance to reveal themselves. And on one day men from the city came to them. The monks (there were only three of them left) realized that these people were hiding their true themselves by pretending to be believers. But they still gave them food and shelter. Indeed, strangers turned out to be members of the bloody cheka and at night captured two monks (Seraphim and Feognost). First, the criminals tortured the monks and then killed them. Moreover, the criminals’ main goal was church gold. Later, the killers were caught for other atrocities and executed. By the way, one of the monks (Anatoly) managed to escape and hide from the criminals.

Petroglyphs Of Tamgaly

Tamgaly is a museum-reserve located in the Zhambyl region, in the southeastern part of the Chu-Ili mountains. It is located 180 kilometers away from Almaty city (if you drive to the north-west). In the immediate vicinity of the museum-reserve, there is Karabastau village. Homonymous tract is extremely interesting for tourists. Here, you will find about 100 monuments representing different eras. For example, ancient tombs, petroglyphs and many other structures that can be considered to be cult ones. The time scatter is impressive. Some structures belong to the 14th-13th centuries BC, and some were built between the 19th-20th centuries. Therefore, this archaeological complex is believed to be a unique one. It preserves the history of many ancient and modern peoples of our country during three millennia. The main object of this territory is the canyon. Its rocks have 5 groups with about 3 thousand petroglyphs. They were carved on the slopes looking in only one direction. In front of all the rocks, there is a place from where these ancient drawings are visible all at a time. At the same time, they are successively combined into intricate and complex compositions. The Tamgaly gallery of petroglyphs is a kind of a story of ancient bronze tribal mythology. Many of the Tamgaly petroglyphs of the Bronze Age are unique part of the Central Asian rock art.

Charyn Canyon The Vallery Of Castles

The canyon got its name after the Charyn river, flowing along its bottom. This attraction enjoys the proud title of “The younger brother of the American Grand Canyon”. Charyn canyon is located 210 kilometers away from the large city of Almaty. It’s not far from the Chinese border – less than 140 kilometers. The canyon is an integral part of the huge Charyn National Park. It was founded in 2004. By the way, the local river is one of the largest in the region. It is more than 400 kilometers long, with its headwaters locating in the highlands of the Ketmen mountain range. The main tributaries of the Charyn river are Karkara and Temirlik. The Charyn river has extremely ancient history of 14 million years! Over the years, it managed to drill a canyon through the mighty mountains. It is a bit over 150 kilometers long. Its unusual and very attractive relief catches one’s sight. Its slopes, hills, columns, arches and many other elements created by the nature look amazing. Carved by water, winds and melting ice masses in ancient sedimentary rocks. Moreover, the h of these objects is impressive as well. It sometimes reaches up to 300 meters. Tourists are fascinated by such fantastic shapes; it looks as if the earth opened wide here, forming a deep crack. The Valley of Castles is justifiably the best place to visit here. This is not about human-made buildings. The valley is formed by the rocks of an unusual shape. They look like ancient castles, which is why they got such a name. Indeed, the landscape of the Valley is unique; there is no other such place on the planet. Sometimes, it even seems that this place was created by an alien civilization.

The Mountain Of Tourists

It is located 3954 meters above sea level. It is situated to the south of the Big Almaty Peak in the homonymous spur of this ridge. These two peaks are separated by the Zhusaly Kezen pass. Despite the fact that the mountain is located at quite a h, it takes only a day to climb it. An incredible view opens from the peak! From a decent h, you can see an amazing panorama of the vast expanses of Zailiysky Alatau with your own eyes and get a bird’s-eye view of the green Almaty city quarters. To get from Almaty to the scientific station, located in the Tien Shan highlands, you should drive past the Big Almaty Lake. The road is good here, you will be able to enjoy the scenery along the way. By the way, it is considered to be the highest mountain road in the country. Then, all you will need to do is to climb 624 meters – if counted vertically, to the Mountain of Tourists. Such an option is considered to be the rightest and shortest in terms of time and distance. You can visit the Mountain of Tourists all year round. However, keep several factors in mind: ticks (found in May and June); in highlands it can be cold even on hot summer days, bright sun (sun screen is a must). Be sure to carry warm clothes so that not to feel cold in highlands or near a lake. By the way, if you wish you can also climb the Big Almaty Peak located nearby. Assy Plateau

Plateau is a large intermountain valley located in the northern part of the Tien Shan. It is more than 20 kilometers long and about 15 kilometers wide. On the southern slope, you can see the majestic Tien Shan fir-trees. Here used to be hunting grounds. Assy Plateau is a huge Zhajljau pasture. In summer, the locals bring here huge herds of livestock (horses, rams, cows, goats) for pasture. These herds can reach up to thousands of heads. During this time, you can see the real shepherd’s yurts with your own eyes. The area of natural boundaries Zhamanuy is surrounded by cliffs of a sophisticated shape. Their structure resembles canyons located near the Charyn River. Clay soil predominates, including small stones and sand. You can spend many hours wandering here, admiring unusual creations of the nature and taking unique photos. To reach the vastness of Assy Plateau, you should overcome an easy pass and cross a small river. The path across the plateau is not a difficult one. Of course, you can face ravines on your way, but there won’t be any complicated obstacles. By the way, in this area archaeologists have found traces of ancient humans. Experts believe thay he lived here 50 centuries ago. And archaeologists often come to the plateau to continue research. The experts are especially interested in grave mounds and stone women, which were built 1-2 thousand years BC. Rising the slope, you will see the observatory at an altitude of 2,665 meters. At first glance, it may seem that the building is abandoned. However, the observatory is still functioning to the present day. Scientists systematically climb here to carry out research. Turgen Clove and Assy plateau have their own history. Before, one of the caravan routes used to pass here, connecting India and China with the Old-World countries.

Turgen Waterfalls

Turgen waterfalls. You can hardly imagine a more picturesque place! Here, you will find the places of interest, as they say, to suit every taste. Turgen Clove is located in the vicinity of Esik town (in about 12 kilometers). It is 70 kilometers far from Almaty. The clove is impressively long, it is 44 kilometers to the huge Assa plateau. The main attraction of Turgen is its seven waterfalls. 800 meters away from the eco-post, you will see two iconic objects: the Kielі-Bylak spring and the Golden Man statue. There is a legend about the waters of this spring – they say that it makes people younger. As far as the monument is concerned, it is dedicated to a Scythian warrior. It is 8 meters high. The remains of the Golden Warrior were discovered on the Issyk river bank. The memorial tablet says that the Scythian warrior lived here as far back as in the fourth century BC. If you drive another three kilometers, you will see a trout farm, which is always crowded with tourists. You can do a bit of fishing on your own by renting fishing gear. Moreover, you can have the caught trout cooked in a neighboring cafe, where you can also order various dishes and refresh yourself. Kairak waterfall. It is believed to be the highest in Turgen Clove. The natural site is located eight kilometers away from a small Batan village. Please note you won’t be able to drive to the waterfall from it. The problem is that the bridge over the river was destroyed by a strong flood in 2004. Kairak waterfall is 56 meters high. It is streaming down from a rocky surface, passing three cascades at once. At the second cascade, the water full of energy has even managed to cut a tunnel right through the rock. If you put the waterfall into perspective, the contrast will immediately catch your eye: dark majestic cliffs and snow-white wild water. Next to the site, there are special wooden and metal bridges, from which you can watch the waterfall. From here, a beautiful view will unfold before your eyes.

Big Almaty Lake And Cosmostation
