Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Nukus, Uzbekistan to Moynaq, Uzbekistan
Day 1 – Journey to the Aral Sea & Ustyurt Plateau Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or the airport in Nukus. After a short briefing, we set off toward Muynak, once a thriving fishing port on the shores of the Aral Sea. In Muynak, you will visit the famous ship cemetery, where rusting vessels now rest in the desert — a powerful symbol of one of the world’s greatest environmental disasters. You’ll also explore the Aral Sea Museum to understand the region’s history and transformation. Lunch is hosted at a local family home, offering a chance to experience authentic Karakalpak hospitality. In the afternoon, the journey becomes more adventurous as we drive off-road across the vast dried seabed of the Aral Sea. This surreal landscape stretches endlessly, giving you a real sense of isolation and scale. As we approach the Ustyurt Plateau, the scenery changes dramatically. You’ll see towering cliffs, deep canyons, and ancient nomadic burial sites scattered across the landscape. By late afternoon, we arrive at a traditional yurt camp near the Aral Sea. After settling in, you can walk along the shoreline and, depending on the season, take a swim in the salty waters. The day ends with a stunning sunset over the Aral Sea, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in yurts under a sky full of stars.
Day 2: Moynaq, Uzbekistan
Day 2 – Canyons, Culture & Hidden Landscapes For early risers, the day begins with an optional sunrise over the Aral Sea — a peaceful and unforgettable moment. After breakfast at the camp, we head out to explore more of the Ustyurt Plateau. Our first stop is Kurgancha Kala, an ancient caravanserai that once served traders traveling along the Silk Road. The journey continues through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the region, with vast canyons and cliffs often compared to the Grand Canyon, but far less visited and completely untouched. We also visit a large nomadic cemetery, where your guide will share insights into local traditions, beliefs, and burial customs. By midday, we return to the yurt camp for lunch and some time to relax. In the afternoon, you’ll have another opportunity to swim in the Aral Sea or simply enjoy the quiet atmosphere of this remote location. Later, we drive to the striking Aqtumsiq canyons, also known as the “Mars landscapes” due to their colorful rock formations. This area is also known for fossilized remains, and with a bit of luck, you may find ancient shark teeth. We return to camp before sunset. After dinner, enjoy the silence of the desert, a campfire atmosphere, and incredible stargazing far from any light pollution. Overnight in yurts.
Day 3: Moynaq, Uzbekistan to Nukus, Uzbekistan
Day 3 – Lakes, Ruins & Return to Nukus The final day begins with another chance to enjoy the sunrise over the Aral Sea, followed by breakfast at the camp. We then begin our return journey toward Nukus, with several fascinating stops along the way. First, we visit the abandoned Soviet-era settlement of Komsomolsk, offering a glimpse into life during the Soviet period in this remote region. Next, we head to Sudochye Lake, an important wetland area rich in birdlife. Nearby, you’ll explore the ruins of the former Urga fish factory — another reminder of the region’s changing environment. We stop for lunch in the Kungrad district before continuing to one of the most significant historical sites in Karakalpakstan — the Mizdakhan necropolis. This vast complex includes ancient mausoleums, legends, and sacred sites that reflect centuries of local history and spiritual beliefs. After the visit, we continue the drive back to Nukus, where the tour concludes in the late afternoon or early evening.
