This 7-day mountain expedition takes you through the most iconic landscapes of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, starting with a cultural exploration of Almaty before heading into the dramatic red rock formations of Charyn Canyon and the turquoise waters of Kolsay Lake. You will witness the mysterious sunken forest of Kaindy Lake and cross the border to Karakol, where the adventure continues with an off-road journey to the alpine hot springs of Altyn-Arashan for an authentic night in a yurt camp. The journey showcases the diverse beauty of the Tian Shan range, from the pristine trekking trails of Jyrgalan and the hidden Kok-Bel waterfall to the legendary red peaks of Jeti-Oguz and the "Fairytale" labyrinths of Skazka Canyon. After exploring the waterfalls of Barskoon and the scenic South Shore of Issyk-Kul, the tour concludes in the vibrant capital of Bishkek, offering a perfect balance of nomadic culture, rugged nature, and comfortable guesthouse hospitality.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Almaty, Kazakhstan to Saty, Kazakhstan
In the morning, we set off for Charyn Canyon, renowned for its striking beauty and grand scale. Walk through the Valley of Castles, marveling at the unique rock formations. Our journey continues to Black Canyon, a lesser-known but equally breathtaking landscape with rugged scenery. Afterward, we head to the tranquil Kolsay Lake, surrounded by dense pine forests and alpine meadows. Overnight: a guesthouse. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 2: Saty, Kazakhstan to Karakol, Kyrgyzstan
Today, we’ll visit Kaindy Lake, renowned for its unique submerged spruce forest that creates an otherworldly, almost magical atmosphere. The journey to the lake will be an adventure in itself, as we travel by rugged Ural Soviet car, adding a touch of nostalgia and excitement to the experience. After exploring the lake and enjoying a picnic lunch, we’ll cross the Kegen Border into Kyrgyzstan and continue our journey to Karakol. Upon arrival, you’ll check into a cozy guesthouse for the night. In the evening, you’ll have the opportunity to savor Chinese-Muslim cuisine, prepared by the Dungan family. The Dungans, descendants of Chinese Muslims, migrated to Central Asia in the late 19th century (around the 1870s–1880s) following the Dungan Revolt in China. Fleeing persecution, they settled in regions like Karakol, bringing with them their rich culinary traditions and agricultural skills. Today, their vibrant culture is an integral part of Kyrgyzstan’s diversity. Distance: Saty Village to Karakol – approximately 200 km (4-5 hours). Altitude: Kaindy Lake – 2,000 meters; Karakol – 1,700 meters.
Day 3: Karakol, Kyrgyzstan to Altyn-Arashan, Altynarasan, Kyrgyzstan
After breakfast, we’ll embark on a journey to the Altyn-Arashan Valley, traveling in a rugged Ural Soviet car for an authentic off-road experience. Known for its breathtaking scenery, the valley is surrounded by towering peaks, lush forests, and pristine alpine meadows. Upon arrival, you’ll have the chance to relax in the valley’s natural hot springs, renowned for their mineral-rich waters and therapeutic properties. Take a leisurely walk around the valley to soak in its serene beauty and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Overnight at a guesthouse or yurt camp there. Meals include breakfast, ash-lyamfu, lunch, and dinner. Distance: Karakol to Altyn-Arashan – approximately 15 km (1-2 hours). Altitude: Altyn-Arashan Valley – 2,600 meters.
Day 4: Jyrgalan, Kyrgyzstan to Karakol, Kyrgyzstan
After breakfast, we will drive to Jyrgalan village. The distance is about 1,5-2,5-2.5 hours. Hiking to Turnaluu Kol Lake Distance: 13.3 km Max. Elevation: 2,862 m Min. Elevation: 2,205 m Difficulty: Easy Duration: 1.5-2 hrs one way Notes: the main goal is to enjoy the way to Turnaluu lake. The lake itself is small, but the view of the valley is amazing!
Day 5: Turgen Gorge, Батан, Kazakhstan to Karakol, Kyrgyzstan
Depart for Turgen Gorge, passing through dramatic landscapes and stopping at old Soviet meteorological stations. Explore the gorge and enjoy the fresh mountain air. The journey continues over the Chon-Ashuu Pass (3822 m). At the summit, marvel at the panoramic views of the rugged mountain peaks and deep valleys below. Transfer back to Karakol
Day 6: Broken Heart Rock, Dzhetyoguz, Kyrgyzstan to Issyk Kul, Kyrgyzstan
Start the day by exploring Jeti-Oguz Gorge, famous for its striking red rock formations, including the “Seven Bulls” and the “Broken Heart.” Continue to Barskoon Gorge, known for its picturesque waterfalls - “Sparkles of Champaign” and “Bowl of Manas” and the Yuri Gagarin Monument, commemorating the cosmonaut’s visit to this region. After lunch, visit Skazka Canyon, where the unique rock formations resemble fairy-tale creatures and castles.
Day 7: Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
