Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to Ölgii, Mongolia
Arrive in Bayan-Olgii Province In the morning, you will take a three-hour flight to western Mongolia. You will arrive in Olgii, the center of the Bayan-Olgii province. This is the land of the famous nomadic eagle hunters and the gorgeous Altai Mountains. The annual Golden Eagle Festival is held on each Autumn in the town of Ulgii The majority population of the region is ethnic Kazakh people, who have kept their traditions for thousands of years. At the airport, you will be welcomed by your local expedition team consisting of a driver, cook, and English-speaking tour guide. We will drive to the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park.Here you can see the real Mongolian nomadic lifestyle and, meet nomadic families who are living in yurts. Day 2: Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Mongolia
Horse Riding Tour and base camp After having breakfast, we will start our horse trekking to base camp. All baggage will be transported by camels, guided by local herders. During the trip, you will be supported by a local horseman and English-speaking tour guide. Our main priority is of course safety during horse trekking. So, on the first day of trekking, we will give you some instructions about how to handle and what is not recommended to do with Mongolian horses. We believe that every horse has their own character like people. To know more about your horse we will make a discussion with the owner of the horse and also talk about Mongolian horses in general. Enjoy an open-air lunch at the halfway point. The lunches will be served via lunchboxes. Base Camp is one of the most beautiful places in Mongolia for camping. Here you have an opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of the Altai Mountains which includes the highest peak Mt.Khuiten and Potanin Glacier. Day 3: Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Mongolia to White River, Mongolia
White-River valley Today we will trek to the White River Valley with a different trail than we came. It is one of the most beautiful valleys of the National Park. Enjoy snow-capped mountains and a stunning white river. The color of the water is really white because it comes from the glacier and the mineral dust turns it white. It is not drinkable. Arrive at the South entrance of the National park. We will pitch our tents at the camping place. For the evening, if you feel like hiking we recommend Green Lake. Day 4: White River, Mongolia to Khoton Lake, Mongolia
Embark on a scenic drive from the Ranger station, venturing towards the enchanting Khoton Khurgan lakes area—a haven where Kazakh nomads seek refuge during the summer months. Along the way, pause to explore the captivating Snake River valley, where ancient burial mounds, petroglyphs, and deer stones narrate tales of bygone eras. The landscape unfolds like a living museum, each element revealing the rich tapestry of history etched into the Altai region. Continuing your journey, the pristine beauty of the lakes area unfolds—where trees sway in the breeze, snow-capped mountains stand sentinel, and crystal-clear lakes mirror the azure sky. As you arrive at the Kazakh nomadic family's dwelling, settle into the rhythmic embrace of nomadic life. The traditional yurt becomes your abode, a gateway to an immersive experience that transcends time. Over the next few days, camp beside the Kazakh yurt, surrounded by the elements that define nomadic existence. The air is imbued with the scent of adventure, and the landscape becomes a canvas for shared moments. Today's highlight is the symbolic act of slaughtering a sheep—a cherished Kazakh tradition reserved for honoring esteemed guests. This gesture marks the commencement of a "Five Fingers" feast, a celebration of camaraderie and cultural exchange. The evening comes alive with the harmonies of song and laughter, echoing through the vastness of the Altai. Day 5: Khoton Lake, Mongolia to Ölgii, Mongolia
Embark on the return journey to Ulgii, making a captivating stop along the way to visit the home of an Eagle hunter's family. Discover the time-honored tradition of hunting with eagles, a form of falconry deeply ingrained in the cultural tapestry of the Eurasian Steppe. This ancient practice is upheld by the Kazakhs and the Kyrgyz, not only in contemporary Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan but also in the diasporas of Bayan-Ulgii Provinces. Day 6: Ölgii, Mongolia to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Bid farewell to the enchanting landscapes of Ulgii as you prepare to fly back to Ulaanbaatar. In the morning, our dedicated driver will ensure a timely drop-off at Ulgii city's airport, facilitating a seamless transition for your departure. As you board your flight, carry with you the memories of the Altai Mountains and the cultural richness of your journey.
