The lake is located in the mountains of Zailiysky Alatau at an altitude of 1756 meters above sea level in Ili-Alatau Nature Park.

The lake is a famous and popular lake not only in Kazakhstan, but also in the CIS countries. In its beauty, it competes with the most famous mountain lakes of the Alps and the Caucasus.

This lake was formed about 8-10 thousand years as a result of a catastrophic earthquake. After the collapse of the gorge, it was blocked by a dam about 300 meters high. Behind the dam at a height of 1756 m, a lake of 1750 x 1500 m and a depth of 50 to 90 m are formed.
