The far western part of Mongolia is the most beautiful, but the least traveled destination. The scenic mountainous region of Western Mongolian territory includes Gobi-Altai Khovd Bayan-Ulgii province. Spread throughout the region are countless archeological sites with ancient petroglyphs... cave painting, standing stone monuments, waterfalls.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to Govi-Altai, Mongolia
Flight to Gobi-Altai In the morning, you will be transferred to the city airport for a morning flight to Altai city. Upon arrival at the local airport, our guide and driver will pick up. The same day, we will head to a 'Kharandaa Khad means Pencil Rock'. Lunch served, on the way. After that, we going to see Kharandaa Rock, this strangely formed mound which is located only 3 km from the Taishir soum was shaped by the lava flow due to the volcanic eruption and is a hexagon trap rock in the column. Hexagon trap is a rare rock. One such rock is found in Delger soum, Dornogobi aimag. After returning to the vehicle, head to Taishir "Water Supply Station".You can go short hiking there. Overnight nomads family.
Day 2: Govi-Altai, Mongolia to Sharga, Togrog, Mongolia
After breakfast, we will drive to Taliin Waterfall. That waterfall is a beautiful place consists of rocks, lakes, and waterfalls where the site of the “Golden Treasure” movie shooting took place. Lunch served, on the way. Overnight in Ger guesthouse.
Day 3: Sharga, Togrog, Mongolia to Khoyd Tsenkheriyn Aguy, Улаанбаатар, Mongolia
After breakfast, we will drive to " Tsenher cave is in Mongolia famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings featuring drawings and polychrome rock paintings of wild mammals and human hands. The Cave has located about 30 km from the center of Mankhan sum (sub-province), about 80 km from the center of Khovd aimag (province), Mongolia. This site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on August 1, 1996, in the Cultural category. Lunch served, on the way. Tonight we will be staying nomads family. These stays among locals will give you the opportunity to share the daily life of your hosts and taking part in their tasks. You will be led to help to make dairy products, to take part in milking the animals, or to help to round up the herd.
Day 4: Khoyd Tsenkheriyn Aguy, Улаанбаатар, Mongolia to Tsambagarav Uul, Mongolia
After breakfast, we will drive to Tsamba Garav snow-capped mountain. Tsambagarav Mountain is a part of the Mongolian Altai Range and is located on the border between Bayan-Ulgii and Khovd provinces. The highest point is Tsast Mountain (4208m) in the west of the range. Lunch served on the way. Tonight we will be staying Kazak nomads family. These stays among locals will give you the opportunity to share the daily life of your hosts and taking part in their tasks. You will be led to help to make dairy products, to take part in milking the animals, or to help to round up the herd.
Day 5: Tsambagarav Uul, Mongolia to Ulgii, Mongolia
Bayan-Ulgii (Eagle Hunter’s family) After breakfast, we will head to an Eagle Hunter’s place. On the way, we will pass Bayan-Ulgii province. Take a short tour of the city, visit the local market. Have lunch and then continue for 50km to the Ulaan Khus soum. Upon arrival, a Kazakh family’s Gers are slightly larger than Mongolian Gers and are decorated with brightly colored rugs. We will enjoy their hospitality and friendliness and learn more in deep about their culture. Their life is completely different from Mongolians. You will see their traditional technology to make a colorful rug. There is a great chance to learn the real way of how eagle hunter family lives and how they train their eagles, Kazakh families are quite large, consisting of three generations, grandparents, parents, and children. You would have a chance to hold the eagle on your arms and taken photos. Overnight with the family.
Day 6: Ulgii, Mongolia to Altai Tavan Bogd Ranger, Mongolia
After breakfast, we will drive towards to Ranger station of Tavan Bogd mountain. Lunch served, on the way. Altai Mountain we will explore the petroglyphs which are more than 8000 years old and is a picturesque mountain with glaciers and permanent snow peaks and is located at the cross border of western Mongolia with Russia and China. The mountain is called Altai Tavan Bogd, because of five high peaks. Arrive at the Ranger station after 5-6 hours. Overnight with the Kazakh family.
Day 7: Altai Tavan Bogd Ranger, Mongolia to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Mongolia
Altai Tavan Bogd Botanian Glacier (Base camp) After breakfast, stay in the family horse guide will prepare horses for us, and we will only ride horses while there. Only horse riding is possible in this way. We will load our luggage on horses. And then the ride begins! An exhilarating start to the adventure. We will stop picnic lunch and photos on the way. We can have ride horses totally 4-5 hours a day. Upon arrival base camp, set up our tents and start the camping. See Potanian glacier around the base camp. Overnight in tents.
Day 8: Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Mongolia
After breakfast, we will prepare climb to Malchin peak on this day which is 4000 meters high. The Malchin (shepherd) is the classical trekking peak of the Altai Tavan Bogd. From the base camp climb the Malchin, walking on the left side of the big Potanina glacier, and then ascending on tiresome but easy scree. The nice summit also is known as Malchin, namely, “Shepherdess”. From here follow all the ridge, always remaining between the scree slopes of the South-side and the glacier on the north side. You should not need crampons unless there is very hard snow in the somewhat steeper stretch to the fore summit 3985m. Be careful and conservative on the last stretch to the summit. Then climb down to the base camp and overnight in tents.
Day 9: Malchin Peak, Mongolia to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Mongolia
After breakfast, our horse guide will prepare horses for us, and we will only ride horses while there. We will load our luggage on horses. And then the ride begins! We will stop picnic lunch and photos on the way. We can have ride horses totally 4-5 hours a day. Arrive in the ranger station and overnight with the Kazakh family.
Day 10: Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Mongolia to Khurgan Lake, Mongolia
After breakfast, we will be driving to Khurgan & Khoton Lake. Khurgan and Khoton lakes, the second-largest, are located in an intermundane tectonic depression in the northern part of the Mongol Altai mountain range and joined by 3km long and 100-150m wide channel called Syrgali. lunch served, on the way. Khurgan Lake lies at an elevation of 2,072m above the sea level, and Khoton Lake at 2,084m. It has a well-deserved reputation for being dangerous because of unpredictable snowstorms and blizzards, and driving under these conditions can be extremely challenging. Tonight staying Kazak nomads family.
Day 11: Khurgan Lake, Mongolia to Baga turgen khurkheree, Mongolia
After breakfast, we will continue with a trip to Baga Turgen valley where a majestic waterfall is located. This is one of the few waterfalls found in the region with high flow rate and icy cold water that flows out from the glacier. Big chunks of rock boulders make the place even more impressive. We will stop picnic lunch and photos on the way. After returning to the vehicle, head to tonight’s family.
Day 12: Baga turgen khurkheree, Mongolia to Ulgii, Mongolia
After breakfast, we will toward driving to Ulgii city for 200 km off-road. Lunch served, on the way. Upon arrive in Ulgii city, go to the city tour and Halal Restaurant (Turkish restaurant) have dinner. Overnight hotel.
Day 13: Ulgii, Mongolia to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Flight to back Ulaanbaatar Pick up our driver from the airport and transfer to the hotel or guesthouse. In the evening we will attend an amazing performance (18:00 pm) of Mongolian traditional music and dance.
