For anyone who is looking to rent a car or a driver and do the Pamir Highway, we strongly recommend Alex as the right person.
We rented in July 2026 a Toyota Land Cruiser from Alex to drive along the Pamir Highway from Dushanbe to Osh, with a stop at the Lenin Peak basecamp in Kyrgyzstan. The car Alex offered managed perform beautifully on any road condition, we never had an issue with it, and this has been a very important part of what made our trip one to remember.
We stayed in touch with Alex after we booked the car on WhatsApp, to discuss the last details of our trip, on picking up the vehicle and dropping it off, during our trip we shared with him our itinerary and he gave us tips to find the best guesthouses and places to refill the gas tank. Alex also helped us with all the logistics for the trip, the Power of Attorney and GBAO permits. And he speaks English really well, and that helped a lot.
Our Pamir Highway trip is one to remember, and for us one of the most important things in order to enjoy it was to feel safe, by having a reliable car, for all plans to go as smoothly as possible. That made the trip fun, enjoyable and memorable.

If you are lucky enough to find yourself in this part of the world and are here wondering if you should take this once-in-a-lifetime trip with Alex, then the answer is YES!!
Alex is a careful and safe driver, and his skills on some of the challenging roads were incredible. He knew all the best guesthouses, places to eat, things to see and without him we wouldn't have got to see a snow leopard at the sanctuary. He is a shughni from the Pamirs so can speak 4 languages as well as teach you all about the local people and traditions. He knows all the best photo spots.
He is honest and upfront about costs, you are not forced and he will work with you on budget and won't recommend a hotel or place to eat unless he really believes in it.
His English is great, and he is quick to respond on whatsapp and helped us with the visa. Whilst on the road, he also makes sure you get through all the checkpoints easy and quickly.
The car is spacious and reliable.
He is also just a wonderful human being who was happy to help anyone we came across along the way if they needed information. He loves animals, always waves at children, and always has a big smile on his face. When he asks, "How did you sleep?" it is a genuine question from a genuinely lovely human being.
We honestly can not recommend him enough! We wish we could do it all over again!

We spent ten unforgettable days driving the Pamir Highway from Dushanbe to Osh via the breathtaking Wakhan Valley, and Alik’s service made the whole experience smooth, reliable, and surprisingly stress‑free.
From the start, Alik proved to be trustworthy and transparent—everything was as described, with no hidden fees or surprise charges. His communication was prompt and friendly; he answered every question, checked in with us while we were on the road, and even suggested places to stay along the route.
A minor hiccup with the driver’s seat was resolved within a few hours just before we set off, and Alik met us in Chorugh to hand over an extra spare tire that he wisely anticipated we might need (we never did).
The Landcruiser itself was rock solid. Apart from a couple of expected quirks for a ~20‑year‑old vehicle—adjustable‑seat trouble and a few stubborn window raisers—there were no major issues, and none of these small problems affected our progress.
A word of advice for other travellers: from thenperspective of a Western European, traveling in Tajikistan often requires a leap of faith compared with the meticulous planning we’re accustomed to at home. At moments we weren’t sure how logistics would unfold, but in the end, Alik’s attention to detail and proactive support ensured everything fell into place. So don't be afraid, sometimes you will need to just trust people. That always worked out fine for us :)
A special shout‑out to Rashim, who actually owned the vehicle. He took over the wheel for the final stretch from Murghab to Sary Mogul and later, after an unexpected change of plans when my girlfriend fell ill, drove us all the way to Osh without any fuss. His skillful driving kept us comfortable and safe throughout.
Overall, renting from Alik (and Rashim) was a highlight of our Pamir Highway adventure. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for a dependable vehicle, honest service, and a local partner who truly cares about your journey.

Alex was very communicative and helpful throughout the whole process and his car is a real soldier. We rented his car from the kyrgyzstan border and then drove the Pamir highway and Wahkan valley ourselves for 5 days finishing in Dushanbe. Alex rode with us to Murhgab and then we met him at a homestay in Khorog to check the car was all ok and then again in Dushanbe for collection. He maintained communication throughout and help guide me through the ins and outs of the car. The car isn't brand new, so if you're expecting a shiny power steering air con vehicle this isn't the car for you. It's rugged, rough and ready and gets you where you need to go with no issues, which is everything you need on these roads.

Our stand in driver Ayoub was a absolute legend and really made our tour special! We cannot speak highly enough of him, always smiling, helpful and patient with us. Ayoub made us feel really safe and looked after for the entire time...a great driver and lovely man! The tour doesn't quite get five stars as we were less happy with the Kyrgyzstan driver. He made us feel rushed, asked about money quite a lot, ate our food without asking, and made us wait outside his house for 45 minutes while he talked to his neighbour. Everything else was perfect and we would highly recommend Alex to other travellers.

We have just completed a 10 day tour in the Pamirs with Alex as our driver and guide. It was the most amazing trip and Alex was excellent throughout. Having been born in the Pamirs, he knows the region very well. He speaks good English, was always happy to answer our questions and was understanding of our needs. The trip could have been disrupted as the President chose to visit the region at the same time and consequently roads were closed and accommodation scarce, but Alex was always one step ahead and adapted our timings so that we could reach our destinations. Hiking the Jizeu valley, the Afghan market, Balun-kul lake and the ever changing landscape of the Eastern Pamirs were the absolute highlights. We would highly recommend Alex.

The car we received was in top condition and drove comfortably. With the car of Alex, the Pamir & Wakhan was a breeze to drive. That is how crazy good of a car we drove! We had no troubles at all starting in Dushanbe and ending at the border with Kyrgystan.
In Kyrgystan there was some miscommunication between the fixers, but Alex solved this quick and professional.

If there was an option, I would rate Alex more than a 100% because he and his friend Rahim did even more than what has been agreed at the beginning! We rented a Toyota Land Cruiser 105 that had all the amenities we needed, even a dash cam with a radar sensor, a modern Bluetooth onboard device, and all the necessary tools to change the tire, if needed.
I drove the car by myself from Dushanbe to Murghab, where we left the car. The road conditions go from perfect to awful, but the car sustained all types of terrain. When our tire broke down we changed it and Rahim met us the same day and gave us not one, but two spare tires! Incredible!
When we left the car in Murghab, Rahim drove us to the Kulma pass where we proceeded with a taxi.
Alex speaks a very good English and Russian, he made sure to suggest the best spots to see on the way to Murghab and he booked also all the homestays for us, which were great!
I can't recommend him enough and thanks again for all the help that made our stay in Tajikistan unforgettable!

The experience with Alex's van was good. It was easy to pick up at the airport and return it as well. The vehicle was in good condition, although it had some details, such as the speedometer not working, which means it should at least have a GPS or a map that shows the speed. The windows would sometimes get stuck, but apart from that, everything was fine. There were no major issues, and it drove perfectly on all roads. It consumes a lot because it's a big vehicle, but everything was correct. Alex was a bit insistent on knowing where we were, which isn't that common for car rental companies in different countries. But apart from that, he fulfilled everything that was agreed upon.

Alex was great from start to finish: he was responsive, fair, and very helpful in organising our trip (self-drive Pamir Highway from Dushanbe to Murghab). The car itself was robust and reliable and could easily handle rough/snowy terrain along the highway including in late March, at the end of the Pamir winter. The only issue with the car is that it didn't have a working speedometer but this didn't affect our experience at all, everything else was great. Alex often went above and beyond for us, organising and recommending (high quality) guesthouses. There were also no hidden fees but it is important to factor in extra costs like power of attorney if you are self driving. The only issue we had was some miscommunication around staying a night in Dushanbe before setting off and expectations for being unaccompanied during the drive i.e. we expected to be alone from the start but Alex wanted to ride along for the first couple of days - which was completely fine and turned out to be helpful - but we weren't aware this was going to happen before arriving (having booked a self-drive tour). Alik is a very reliable guy. We told him a few places that we want to see and he planned the route for us. He also arranged the accommodation for us in rural areas, for bigger city like Khorog, we could choose the accomodation based on our budget. Other than that, he also thought about the high altitude because we were doing the tour from Osh to Dushanbe.
The price was very fair and it was worth every penny. Because we had to cross the Kyzyl art border, we had to hire a driver from Kyrgyzstan side to drive us to the border and meet up with Alik on the other side. The whole process was quite complicated as we had to prepare some documents and only a few drivers from Kyrgyzstan have the permit to drive to the border. You can trust Alik and the information that he provides.

I did a 7-day Pamir Highway Loop with Alik and it was the best decision I ever made! Pamir Highway itself is an amazing scenic route that I cannot put into words but what made it extra special was the insightful conversations with Alik during the long car rides.
I had so many questions about the Tajik way of life, religion, culture, politics etc and he was ever so patient to answer all of them with intellect and humour. I even asked silly questions like why are the people just sitting on the roadside doing nothing in the villages and he answered that it depends on seasonality of the crops and explained when they’re busy and when they’re not and more. I learnt so much about the Tajikistan through Alik more than any other travel guides I’ve read.
So if you considering between guides at this stage, go with Alik because he is not only a skillful driver and have a great car, he is also a great conversationalist and you will learn so much about Tajikistan!

Alik is the man of the Pamir and we are so so so lucky to have him as our driver for this once-in-a-lifetime journey
Firstly, he was very knowledgeable about the region and provided good suggestions when we were finalizing the itinerary. Alik can speak very fluent English (both speaking and writing) hence the communication between us was smooth and seamless. We were constantly in touch to update via whatsapp and instagram (@pamir_guide) and he had been very responsive to our messages.
When we met in Dushanbe, he took great care of us - bringing us to the visa center to apply for the GBAO permit and even bringing us around to exchange money and fix our SIM card. He went beyond his duty as a driver to share with us stories and history about the Pamir and Tajikistan. Alik was attentive to our needs and chose the best homestays for us - comfortable beds and hearty breakfast (we especially love Rooma in Kalaikhum - beautiful guest house nested along the stream and Eco guest house in Murghab - high standard given the condition). One of us fell sick with a really bad cough and Alik brought us to see a doctor in Khorog. We wouldn't have done so without Alik's help in translation. It feels awesome to be travelling through the Roof of the World knowing we are well-taken care of under Alik's mastery with the harsh road condition and his genuine heart to want the best for us.

Renting a car from Alik was a great experience - he was very responsive and provided excellent guidance for our self-driving trip in Pamirs. We made over 2k kilometers exploring beautiful landscapes and landmarks of Tajikistan and did not have any serious issues with the car (while some of the roads are really bad!).
Overall, we highly recommend such a trip (and Alik!) just make sure to be ready to do tons of driving in harsh conditions in case you want to do self-driving.

Six of us had a fantastic 10 days with Alik and his colleague in two reliable Landcruisers. We did a loop from Dushanbe stopping at Qalai-Khumb, Khorog, Zong, Bulunkul, Murghab, Basid, Jizev and Qalai-Khumb again. I think the only thing we would change is stopping in Savnob rather than Basid to make the day from Murghab shorter. The highlights were the Wakhan Valley, trying (and failing) to find the Shakhty petroglyphs (stunning valley but no guide around to help), and the homestay at Jisev. Alik found very good homestays for us and most of the lunch stops were very good. I would recommend Alik to anyone. Would recommend taking two cars through Bartang Valley - the ‘road’ is terrible!

Without Alik George and I, only 17 and 18 wouldn’t have experienced the Pamirs and it’s famous highway in all its beauty and majesty. Unable to do the classic route from Dushanbe to Osh, Alik instead took us on a loop round the Wakhan Valley up to the high-altitude Pamir Plateau before returning to the canyons on the Afghan border. We stayed in homestays with just us, where only Alik would know, one tucked away high up in the Yamchun Valley overlooking the snow capped peaks of the Hindu Kush next to a hotspring. This whole area is peaceful and beautiful with villages buried in orchards and wildflowers. It fell incredible travelling though mountains which straddle between three such wondrous countries. We then began our proper ascent up to the plateau and with Alik’s experienced driving skills we crossed a river whose bridge had collapsed. Most other drivers with smaller cars would not have been able to do so. We climbed up to 4300 at a moon-like valley where the lakes resembled craters in the peaks. You then arrive at an incredible vista which opens out onto the vast, desolate plateau with its salt lakes and pink rock that stretches onto the horizon. It is a unique and humbling place. We spent the night at the Bulunkul village, an incredible experience spending time with the locals who live in the said-to-be coldest place in Central Asia, with only themselves, matted dogs and the wind to occupy themselves around the squat mud-brick houses. It was very special, and the locals were all so friendly even if they did gape at us like aliens on their planet. The next day we went fishing at an unnamed lake, alone next to a gushing stream and turquoise water. The next night we stayed at the Kumde Hunters lodge hidden in an evermore remote valley the way of which only Alik seemed to know down some tyre tracks. Here we were alone and watched the sunset over the peaks. This was an experience, with snow leopards and the Milky Way that only Alik can take you on. We then began our descent and stayed in great hostels, one overhanging a turquoise river. Alik knows where to stop to eat and drink with the least risk of food poisoning however this is still a risk everywhere, as well as altitude sickness. This journey is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for everyone, thank you so much Alik.

I can say that we had a trip to areas that often took our breath away thanks to the itinerary set up by Alex. Our time was slightly more limited and many others told us it would not be possible to see all that we had read about but Alex made it happen. And we never felt rushed. We had a really good time together with Alex. He is a very friendly and kind person. His car is the King of Pamir, it is a strong Toyota Land Cruiser. You have much space to sit and because of the big windows you can perfectly enjoy the landscape.
Before our trip started, we already had a good conversation via Indy-guide with Alex. He helped us planning the trip and discussed different options to find the best way to discover Tadschikistan. He recommended several things and was also open for our ideas. That was very good.
He was just in time when our tour started. Also the rest of the time went perfect. He was always there like we had told him. He liked to say : “As you wish/ as you like”. He really follows your wishes.
He arranged all guesthouses and homestays during the trip. We like them all because they were good quality and we got in touch with many local families and their way to live. We also stayed in a Yurt at Bulunkul. The family was very kind to us. Another highlight was our walk to Jizev at Bartang Valley. Not only for the nice people but also for the landscape and atmosphere. This village is only reachable by foot. Alex has good connections along the way up to Osh. He knows many people, not only at the homestays but also some to do different activities. For example we made a great walk near Khorog with an old shepherd and we go fishing at a lake with another friend of him. We had 6 trouts and they tasted very delicious. You can always choose if you want the extra activities or not. Because of his very good knowledge he showed us a lot. Also his choice of restaurants for lunch were always good.
And the human behind the driver is a very fine person. He is a sympathetic, trustful guy. You feel, you are in good hands. Alex took very good care of us, has a good sense of humour and likes kids a lot. He himself always got a warm welcome from the people we met. His English is pretty good and we had nice conversations from time to time. He also shared his knowledge of Pamir with us. All in all he is a person we very much liked to travel with. We started as driver and customer and at the end, we are friends and still in contact.

We (3 people) engaged Alex’s services from 14-20 Aug 2019 from Osh to Dushanbe via Pamir Highway. All we can say is, Alex is perfect, perfect, and most perfect. Alex was very punctual, very polite, and so funny! He took a lot of effort to know our preferences in food & accommodation and he only gave us nothing but the BEST!
Food was so delicious and Alex volunteered to include a free fish meal for us at Bulunkul which was super good! Alex arranged a couple of fabulous hikes for us for free and also a visit to the Saturday Afgan market which we enjoyed all!
No matter how many times we told Alex we wanted to stop for photos, Alex always happily stopped, and also recommended us nice places for great photos. He is so patient and professional, we feel like we left Alex as friends! He is a very experienced & safe driver and you will be very comfortable in his clean Toyota Landcruiser, which even has cushions. His prices are also so reasonable we recommended him to our Guesthouse in Osh.

I strongly recommend Alex. He is a very good driver and an excellent driver. He is kind always careful to what you need and happy to give you an help when needed. He speaks a very good English and he wants to improve his knowledge because he is very curious and that makes him a perfect mate when adventure is calling.
Pamir and GBAO in general is a wonderful region. You will see. The only problem you have to deal with are the roads, which are not often in perfect condition (so to say). Alex’s car is perfect for those kinds of road, because it is big and strong. It is comfortable and you won’t miss the opportunity to travel in total security.
My experience in Pamir was simply amazing and a review will always be reductive.

We had an unforgettable trip with Alex from Dushanbe to Osh in 10 days (July 2019). Besides the nature, diverse of cultures, people, languages… Alex was one of the main factors which made this trip a life-long experience.
He is an excellent driver, experienced with the roads and all the region. His car is perfect for this road, comfortable and in good conditions. He is reliable, gives you the feeling you can trust him at all. The home stays he chose for us were the bests, comfortable, beautiful views, delicious food, hospitable, friendly... So, don’t worry, you will enjoy the trip with the feeling to be in the right hands from the very first moment to the last kilometer.
He speaks excellent English (and native Russian) with a great sense of humor. With his great knowledge about the Pamir District he will answer all of your questions and enrich you with many stories which will make the trip even more magical.
By the end of the trip we were like 4 friends travelling together. We spent extra 2 days in Osh after the trip and Alex companied us the whole time…
Some important tips: We met some of Alex’s friends during the trip, wonderful people. They let us enjoy the region with priceless memories. I highly recommend you the trek in Khorog with Nazar (60 years old shepherd, he is a wonderful person with funny stories and his wife will cook for you delicious food ) and the fishing day in Bulunkul with Hasan. You will enjoy it… Go to Karakul, meet my little friends Ibrahim and Abdulvassi, look into their eyes. I promise you, this moment will be the peak of this trip and you won’t forget it till your last minute. And please hug them for me…

I spent one week with Alex, travelling the Pamir Highway from Osh to Dushanbe. He was a pleasure to travel with, full of answers to all of my questions, and also with many questions of his own, wanting to understand better who I was and where I came from. As he cheerfully told me numerous times, "You are the boss!", and so it was - no matter how many times I requested that Alex stop the car so that I could get out and truly immerse myself in the landscapes / locations that we were driving through, he happily did so. The trip itself was pure magic in terms of geography, scenery, and sites, with the homestays being a particularly rich experience, giving one a brief but powerful immersion into day-to-day lives in the communities that we were passing through. The sleeping arrangements (usually shared) were perfectly good throughout, as was the food. All in all, this was a fantastic trip, and I was very happy to have done it with Alex, who was a great host for his country, an endless source of knowledge and information, and a really nice person to spend a week with. I recommend both this trip and Alex highly!

Every time we asked for some thing during the trip, his one statement was " Your wishes, my command".
He is an amazing person and also a good guide. He answered to all the possible questions we asked him without geting irritated or angry. He took all the detours wherever we asked him to take, he himself used to stop at beautiful points where he felt that we could walk a bit to take great pictures and also stopped how many ever times we asked him to stop.
Not knowing Russian, he was a great translator and because of that we could interact a lot with local people.
The car was very comfortable and did not break down even once. The interior was good, has charging facility, usb and aux for music, flor mats and overall it was 99 out of 100.
The remaining 1% is i insist you to try travelling with him and judge...

we asked Alex if the driver had experience on the Pamir highway and we were told that he had been working with him for 5 years. Plot twist: our driver could not cross the border from Tajikistan to Kyrgyzstan because he had failed to stamp out of the country last time he went there, in 2016 .... We almost had to walk the last 30 kms to Sary Tash because of this and wasted a lot of time at the border. Our driver was also constantly trying to change the itinerary to get to a town for "internet" (the one word he repeated over and over).

I was looking forward to my journey on the pamir highway but unfortunately he set me up with a driver who did not speak English and didn't seem to have much customer experience. I was unable to communicate and was never sure exactly where I was going or what I was missing out on. I would hope Alex strives to provide a better experience for future customers especially females, as I would not currently recommend this.
