But the more intriguing is the visit of the archaeological sites spread all over Taxila, Swat and other parts of North West Frontier Province of Pakistan and the Gilgit-Baltistan that have been discovered in the twentieth century.
Driving on the Karakoram Highway, we can recapitulate the history by visiting hieroglyphs that are found along the Indus, Gilgit and Hunza Rivers. These carvings bear not only the “guest books” of passing by traders and pilgrims but also depict the natural beliefs of fairy worshipers.

Pakistan has gained a prominent position in the international market for supplying a wide variety of gemstones and mineral specimens. The Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan is enriched with the variety of mineral treasures that include peridot, emerald, aquamarine, tourmaline, topaz, ruby, sapphire, garnet, red spinal, pargasite, actinolite, diopside, epidote, vesuvianite, axinite, rodingite, sphene, fluorite, apatite, zircon, rutile, azurite, moonstone, ametrvst, rose quartz and agate.
Aquamarine is the blue variety of beryl. Pakistani aquamarine has light green and blue coloration, and the crystals are well shaped. Dusso aquamarine crystals are very large in size ranging from 1 cm to 8 cm in width and up to 15 cm long. Large and matchless specimens of aquamarine (about 10 Kg in weight and 40 cm long) are usually associated with apatite or fluro-apatite, topaz, gem garnet, schorl, and sheaths of muscovite, is the specialty of Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan Pakistan.

Deo Sai Plain Tour Astor To Baltistan

The Deosai is at its best from mid-July to end of September. While the weather can be glorious in daytime during this period, the temperature drops dramatically at night, and can also turn nasty very quickly, which intense windstorms often sweeping across the plateau.
The plateau is home to the Himalayan Brown Bear (Ursus arctos Isabellinus), a species of bear unique to this part of the world. Other mammals include the Golden Marmot (in large numbers), Tibetan Wolf, Tibetan Red Fox, Himalayan Ibex, Ladakh Urial and various small rodents, including voles and shrews. Reptiles include lizards such as the Himalayan Agma, Ground Skink and Glacial Skink. The unique snow carp are found in the Deosai rivers. This region also home to some Snow Leopards and Musk Deer, particularly among birch and juniper forests. The recently discovered Alpine Toad looks set to qualify as a separate species. The plateau provides spring and summer breeding grounds for many of Pakistanis birds, including the Himalayan Golden Eagle, Lammergeier (bearded vulture), northern Hobby (a falcon), Kestrel and Long-legged Buzzard, as well as larks, wagtails, warblers and sand plovers. It also lies on the flight path a number of migratory birds which can be seen from late September to mid-October on their return from central Asia to the plains of the subcontinent. Species include the Osprey, Damoselle Crane, Little Trunk, Great Black-headed Gull and ducks such as the Common Teal, Pintail, Shoveller, and Marganzer. More than 40 spices of plants and grasses are found on the Deosai, including colorful flowers such as Aconitum, Rheum, Iris, Astragalus ad Spiraea.
There is also a wealth of herbs and medicinal plants, including Ginger, Primula, Geranium, Mint, Artemesia, Rubus and Barberry. At lower altitude on the peripheries wild rose is found, as well as trees such as Juniper, Blue Pines, Spruce, Penciul Cedar, White Birch, Himalayan Poplar and Chinese Salix

Muhammad was excellent. He always replied promptly to WhatsApp and emails in good clear English. Whilst we had a rough idea of what we wanted to achieve during our 2 ½ weeks in Gilgit-Balistan he provided very helpful and sensible input over several weeks and the programme that we arrived at was exactly what we had hope to achieve. His driver Sami was an absolute delight and pleasure to be with. He was excellent company and at our invitation joined us for most of our meals and our various expeditions and adventures, overnight camping trips, day hikes sightseeing et cetera. Sami’s driving skills were incredible getting the Prado up, round and through things with ease and great humour. He spoke good English, was personal and went the extra mile again and again. He became far more than a driver; a guide, in car DJ, fixer, finder, shopping guru, bag carrier (hiking), travelling companion and above all friend. Muhammad during our trip became our enigmatic Guardian Angel always there in the background checking in daily with Sami updating us and providing his experience to smooth over any problems we encountered on the road. Muhammad has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the region he is a published author and heavily involved in community projects. He and Sami appeared to be well known and respected and barely a day went past without bumping into someone who knew one or both of them. The Prado was exactly what we wanted a reliable no-frills go anywhere vehicle that didn’t exude foreign tourist :-). I understand Muhammad is a very experienced mountaineer and takes people on more challenging trips too. I can’t recommend Muhammad and Sami enough they were quite simply brilliant and made our trip something very special and memorable.
