About Peter
His name is Peter Kinyaiya, the local Tour Guide & Operator in Tanzania, born and raised on the slope of our Majestic Mount Kilimanjaro at 1400m.
He was a porter on Mt Kilimanjaro for more than 6 years before keeping some money, going back to college, and training to be a qualified tour guide. After working with other companies for 10 years, he decided to get into the field and run safaris and trekking tours himself. In 2014, Twende Africa Tours Company was founded with his comrade Porters, all from the brotherhood. Their dream was to give ordinary people the life-changing opportunity to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. By booking with them, you support the life of local communities directly; they will take you there, not send you there!

Moshi is a town in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. It’s known as a gateway to Kilimanjaro National Park, home to Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. Trails run up the mountain’s cloud-ringed, snow-capped dome, through alpine forests and meadows home to elephants and leopards. Day Tour To Materuni Waterfalls And Coffee Tour In Tanzania

Nestled in the patchwork foothills of magnificent Kilimanjaro lies the beautiful village of Materuni, home to our Chagga friends and famous for its aromatic, rich coffee. On this fragrant and fun day out, you’ll get a chance to make your own cup of coffee the proper way, and you’ll find out the secret to the perfect cup of coffee from the local Chagga people. Next, you’ll hike the short but challenging route to the Materuni Falls, and you can stand under the waters as they cascade into a tranquility pool that’s safe for bathing. And you’ll want to jump straight in – after getting sweaty (ok, glowing!) from your hike, there’s nothing more soothing than floating in the cool waters. Enjoy your packed lunch before or after your swim – there are no rules!
Start your mini-adventure with the short but fascinating drive from Moshi up the lush slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to the village of Materuni, approximately 1,800 m above sea level. This is market garden territory and has the perfect mixture of climate and soil to produce some of the best coffee in Africa. You’ll visit a coffee farm and learn about how coffee is grown, harvested, and processed, and you’ll try your hand at roasting and preparing a fresh cup of coffee the Chagga way. After a delightful coffee break (so much better than the ones at work!), you’ll take a beautiful 45-minute hike through the hills and valleys en route to the Materuni Falls. You’ll pass through banana and coffee plantations, up and down mini-valleys, across ridges, and through narrow splashing rivulets. Along the way, your guide will teach you about local plants and how they are used for food and traditional medicine, as well as giving you more insight into the local Chagga culture.

Mt Kilimanjaro Hiking Full Day Trip In Tanzania

On this day trip, you will hike on the Marangu Route up to Mandara Hut for lunch. You will NOT reach the summit. All short treks are offered on a private basis, and you can start on any day of the year. The short treks are geared for people who like to hike, but reaching the summit isn’t a “must-do”, and allows one to experience the excitement of hiking on the highest peak on the African continent. All trekking inside the Tanzania National Park requires the services of a certified Kilimanjaro guide, and the Marangu route is the only route where short treks are allowed.
The Kilimanjaro Marangu route, nicknamed the ‘Coca Cola’ route, has historically been the most popular Kilimanjaro route. Around 12,000 people use it each year, most commonly those on a tight budget. This is because it’s the only Kilimanjaro route offering dormitory-like accommodation (you get mattresses and other basic amenities). This makes it a popular choice for budget Kilimanjaro operators that don’t have camping equipment to offer.
The Marangu route also only takes five days to complete, which makes also makes it a cheaper option compared to the other routes. However, the acclimatisation profile is mediocre, which leads to a very low success rate, therefore not offering the best value for money. And whilst it offers rewarding views from ‘the Saddle’, it’s less scenic than other Kilimanjaro routes as it uses the same trail for both the ascent and descent. Otherwise, the route itself is easy, with almost no steep sections. The rainforest and moorland sections of the trail are beautiful.

Kilimanjaro Climbing By Car, Day Trip For Non-summit People

Take a day trip to the Shira Plateau of Kilimanjaro for the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Climb to the top of the Shira Plateau, the oldest peak of Kilimanjaro, and capture photos of the area.
Shira Route is Kilimanjaro’s newest route. Being the longest way to Uhuru Peak makes it the least frequented. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Shira Ridge. The vehicle bypasses the rainforest zone, and the hiking trail begins on Shira Ridge. The Shira route crosses the entire Shira Plateau from west to east in a pleasant, relatively flat hike. Then the route traverses underneath Kilimanjaro's Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu for the summit people.
Shira Route is also the only route that makes an arc of 270°, allowing you to see different aspects of the Kibo Volcano This makes climbing Kilimanjaro on the Northern Circuit Route highly popular amongst photographers. Moreover, the longer duration of this trek makes for better acclimatization and an easier climb to Uhuru Peak for the summit people.

This was my second time choosing Peter, and once again they exceeded my expectations. After climbing Kilimanjaro with them, I decided to book the Mount Meru hike with the same team—this time as a solo female hiker.
