The Golden Eagle Festival is an annual cultural festival held in Bayan-Ulgii Province, Mongolia. Organized by the Mongolian Eagle Hunter's Association, it celebrates the traditions of Kazakh eagle hunters who train and hunt with golden eagles. Competitions are held to showcase eagle handling skills, as well as traditional Kazakh dress and horsemanship. Events take place both in central Ulgii and on the nearby steppe, approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) outside the town. The Kazakhs is an ethnic minority of the Mongolia, but the majority in Bayan-Ulgii province. These hardy Turkic speaking people are sunni muslim nomads and they hunt foxes and other small mammals with domestic Golden Eagles. Only the females, as they are heavier than male eagles. The eagle festivals marks the start of the eagle hunting season, which is throughout the winter in the surrounding Altai Mountains. Hunting with eagles seems to be ancient, dating back some 6000 years. The traditions have been revived over the past two decades following the democratization in Mongolia. Now there are such festivals in March, September and October in various communities.
